The truth about cheat meals.....

IMPO, if you feel like you have to have a cheat meal, even once in a while, then you must be depriving yourself..... Why ?

I eat a LOT, and I love every bite of food that goes into my mouth. It's either flavorful from the get, or I "flavor it" with whatever kinds of seasonings, or cooking sauces I want to. Some of it has a little sugar, but I use as much art. sweetener as I want to, also.

I make 10 jumbo egg whites taste good every morning, so what does that tell you ?

Besides all that, I eat a BUNCH of fruit, green vegetables, tons of nuts, raisins, peanut butter, and two 3/4 cup bowls (dry) oatmeal, with usually, a cup of strawberries and a cup of silk very vanilla.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The point is, I eat such great tasting food, an so much of it, I feel like I am cheating..... All the time ! Yet I break even at about 4000 cals a day.
Yes, I am a big guy , my work is often very physical, I workout hard, and I play hard too (mountain bike)
Now, I'm not saying everybody, or especially smaller women, would / could ever eat like I do, but its still all relative. I get decently hungry eating 4000 a day.... especially if I'm doing extra cardio.
A smaller guy, or especially a little women might only eat 2000..... but to them this is a lot, as they were only able to eat 1300 a day before they started working out > and eating lower quality foods. {my food is like rocket fuel baby ;)}
One more thing > there are a LOT of different "treat types" of foods that I don't eat any more > at all. Ice cream is one. Fast food. Highly processed foods with long ingredient lists. Candy bars. {closest I get is maybe a Cliff or Power bar.... justified by 20 to 30 gm protein ;) I really don't eat cheese anymore either. Just another item with high fat density, while I know I can get better fats from other sources + the fact that, speaking totally for myself, cheese just tends to slow my digestive system down. I'm hammering some serious food, and I need to keep things moving ;)
However, 1) I eat so many great tasting things in place of these things ^ {and a few more} , and 2) You just get used to it. Note; It's pretty easy to get used to "feeling good" and eating lots of great food ;)
Here's a few pics... Hope this works :)
My typical dinner....
The fridge.... All the green veggies, tomatoes, and onions are in the crisper below :) tons of chicken breasts, pork tenderloin, and a little red meat in the freezer ....but this shot was taken 3 days ago, and I've been beating on it pretty hard ;)
Did somebody say somthing about food depravation ??? ;) LOL Yea ! Does it look like I'm starving ?
Me this morning..... we took about 100 shots, 3 or 4 were okay... and then this one :) LOL I wish I looked this swole / ripped all the time :) Hoping for the day when I can take 120 photos, and the worst ones look this good :) LOL
I think the point of cheat meals for many people is to have the things that may not be considered healthy for you such as the ice cream, candy bar, or fast food. From what I see of what you eat, none of it is something I would consider for a cheat meal. I don't do cheat meals, as I try to incorporate something I want everyday as long as it is within my calorie range. Other people like to have a whole day where they can cheat or just a meal. I think if it works for them then that's wonderful. A cheat day wouldn't work for me as I would go overboard.
What you have works for you, however, as you said eating that many calories isn't doable for most of us.
Everything I eat, all day long, is something I want ! Everything I eat tastes so freaking good !
Again, my point is, I just don't see how a person could ever stay on the right track, with health and fitness, if they are not truly happy / comfortable with their lifestyle ???
If you are depriving yourself of anything, how long can that last before you cave ? 6 months ? 1 year ? And what will that be good for ?..... uh... about 6 months, or 1 year.
I'm thinking I can eat / excercise / play / live the way I do, for the rest of my life, simply because, I'm happy / comfortable with it.
PS, Munch, I did say that "how much food I eat" is all relative.
I think a person could eat most of the same stuff I do, just adjusted in # of cals, for their size, and metabolism, and do just as well as I have > without feeling deprived.
I agree so much. I went vegan and people were like, "what do you eat that sounds so boring" and I'm like, "nooooooo I'm eating the most interesting and delicious foods ever in my whole life, I've never eaten so flavorful and healthy before". I agree with you, and I agree with why many have a "cheat" day. Cheat days or meals are things like potato chips, candy bars, you know what I mean, the "bad" stuff. I personally have learned to control it (for the most part) so that I have them on occasion and don't feel bad about it because I'm like you, I don't feel like I am depriving myself because everything I cook tastes so good! I mix stevia into rich red vinegar wit a tad bit of pepper and pour it over fresh cut strawberries and let it soak for an hour. It's a (cane) sugar-free dessert that is soooooooo delicious I don't need candy or chips to go with it. It tastes like the inside of a strawberry pie. I think peoples problem is a lack of creativity to "cheat" without cheating. I have learned to make my own vegan and sugar-free chocolate. I make it with cocoa powder, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and stevia and it's soooo good, sometimes I will melt some and put it on (no sugar added) dried berries like cranberries and blueberries and I feel totally guilt-free when I eat them. I always remember to add them into my calories for the day. I "cheat" on a daily basis and continue to lose weight.
I agree - being a little creative with food gives you so many options. When you start giving your body the right kind of fuel and no longer depriving it of what it needs, you no longer crave unhealthy things like crisps, ice cream etc. Its no big deal if you have it once in a while but the point I'm trying to make is that, you no longer crave it - which to me, is freedom :)
Some people need to have cheat days where they eat things like pizza, fries etc in order to be able to stay on course with their eating plan. I used to do this when I first started my weight loss plan and it actually enabled me to lose alot of weight as compared to when I deprived myself 100 %.....nowadays I dont feel the need to do this so often.
The above strategy works in 2 ways - one is to help keep you on track with healthy eating and the second is that when have 1 or 2 days where you have more calories than you usually do, it tricks the metabolism to keep itself in high gear. Lowering calories too much and for too long makes your body go into starvation mode - at some point or another, you will binge, you will go nuts :-(
Not good.
Not everyone has the time to concoct "freaking good" meals; and it does take time. In the summer, when school is out, I basically go from one full-time and 3 part-time jobs down to 2 part-time jobs and I have a lot more time to create my healthy masterpieces. But during the school years I just don't have the time to spend on meals and I will many times eat a boring meal - this is when I want to cheat.
I think pizza is a gift from the gods and I almost always will cheat with pizza. My wife will almost always cheat with something chocolate. I try to plan my cheat meals by eating lighter the other two meals of the day and trying to get in a little extra exercise. This helps out a lot and many times I still have a great calorie day even though I have a cheat meal.
If I don't plan a cheat meal and just have one then it almost always spells disaster!
Everyone is different. Some people can do a cheat meal and others just get thrown totally off kilter if they do it. You must know how your body and psyche will be affected with a cheat meal. If it really affects you negatively, then don't do it. If it works well for you then have fun!
AI follow an intermittent fasting diet and watch what I eat pretty closely, but I feel that having a big high calorie cheat meal once every two weeks or so is actually good for weight loss, and will help keep your body from adapting to a caloric deficit and halting weight loss.
Looking swole in that picture btw!
Tom, I wouldn't say > that I have time, to make / put together a bunch of really healthy food, but rather > I MAKE the time ! Same thing with making time to do my weight training, and my cardio. Sure, their will always be things that I could do instead. I have several other interests besides health and fitness, not to mention this pesky arse "work thing" which is always trying to get in the way ;)
Yes, some people can have a cheat meal every now and again, and not get thrown off by it. However, when you look at the number of people "who say they can do this"..... and I don't mean just right now, but rather, way down the road, it seems like exceedingly few of them continue to keep control of this, hence the reason SOOO many of them end up right back where they started, obese, and very unhealthy.
Not only is my method absolutely the best method "for me", but I'm convinced it really would be the best, long term method, for most others...... if only they could just make that big step, of putting together an "off limits" food list, and being done with it.
The proof is in the pudding.
Check back with me in a few years.
