The real deal on calories burned

Hey,
There is a lot of info out there on how many calories one might burn performing a specific exercise but there are so many variables that are not accounted for. My question is--what is the most accurate method for an individual to calculate his/her calories burned performing an exercise?
Thanks.

I guessing here, but I'm gonna go with heart rate by amount of time. Anyone else have a guess (or actually know the answer)?

You are right there are many variables. Your basal metabolic rate, your body weight and mass, your activity level, your diet, etc. I'm not sure what the most accurate method of figuring this out is but there is a useful tool for calculating a few of these variables on . It will at least help to give you a general idea.

Here's a handy tool you can use:

Most accurate? A series of ultra-accurate weight test and blood samples I'd imagine :) You should be satisfied with an estimate.
