The Plank

Hey guys, I'm new here. Decided to join after realizing how much a forum helped me to be a better trumpet player, so I figured maybe a fitness forum could help me get in shape.

I've been working on this body of mine for about 6 months now, and saw some improvement, but not much... . So I decided to get serious about 2 weeks ago.

Anyways...

My original question is about the Plank excersise. Currently my core muscles are probably me weakest, and through reading Men's Health and other various resources, I've come up with a core strengthening routine. The only problem lies with the plank.

I'm going to assume most of you are familiar with the excersise, so I had a question. I am feeling more strain in my shoulders when doing it, than I am in my obliques and abs. Is this how it's supposed to be? I can't get through the reccomended 3 reps this way, because it tires my shoulder to quickly.

Any thoughts?

Is the pain in your shoulder soreness or is it pain, as in there is something wrong with my shoulder pain? Due to body tension, I am sure you are going to feel something in your shoulder, but if it HURTS, do not do the exercise.

Hopefully that helps you out a little!

hmm i do planks and i don't feel pain, i test myself and try to go from 2 to 3 mins. and i also do a right and left rotation to, trying to work back up to 2 mins. are you doing them right?? as in right positioning of the arms etc.. that maybe why. if it hurts i would say lay off them or check that your form is correct. just a guess.

I had the same problem, my arms gaaave way before I felt anything in my obliques. Now I just do side bends instead.

The shoulder pain you feel during the plank may be thorasic weakness and scapular pinching. if you perfrom the planks and you chin "juts" forward to teh floor, you have very wear upper body core muscels (thorasic). If you have real pain, you may already have bursistis and the plank just agrrevates it. You should see an MD.

It's not pain. It feels just like the excersise is working my shoulders more than the intended area. Today my shoulders are sorer (is that a word? :p ) than my obliques. A good, post-workout, kind of sore.

baseball tears down shoulders, and a 20 foot snowboarding fall onto a throwing shoulder doesn't help, so I had the same problem. Every day before and after practice for about 3-4 weeks I would do a shoulder strengthening routine with the trainer. Then ice. the routine (I think) was internal/external rotations, overhand throws (with a band attached behind you), and pull back and raise up.
After a few weeks of that with some shoulder press, you should be good to go I'd think
