The New Me, miracles of modern science...

There may be some of you who remember me from my previous stays here in this forum. Many others have never met me, as you have joined here in my hiatus. I have been, and continue to be a member of other forums as well, but thought I could share some pertinent information here as well as continue to follow my story.

Flashback to 2007 ish. Weighed 389 lbs, was a 2 pack a day smoker. High B/P and Sleep apnea. Cholesterol of 260. My VO2 max was 15.65, which wasn't far away from needing oxygen...

Dropped to 330 lbs by summer of '08. Quit smoking in August, and started exercising more regularly. No question I was becoming more fit, and healthier in some regards, but...

I was a yo yo. Yes, I was consistent about exercise, its how I managed to keep off the cigarettes, but I had little self control with portion control, or just pushing away from the table... In 2009 my wife underwent RNY gastric bypass surgery and lost 130 lbs. She looks amazing, and took to the lifstyle by becoming more active. I finally decided in January of '10 that I would look into it. By then I had also been diagnosed with early stages of type 2 diabetes. I was still weighing in at 330 lbs after occasionally dropping down under 300 for short stints, and then falling off the wagon hard once more.

After going through the counselling sessions and appointements, I had my surgery on May 20th of '10. Liquid diet, then blended for the first month, then soft food and eventually full solid food. Watching my vitamin, protein, and calcium levels.

Activity has not been a problem anyhow and that part has not changed. The bottom line is, that effectively what I got from the surgery was built in self control. Even before, the problemwas less one of eating the wrong things, more eating too much of the right things. Now I don't over eat. I do a full body resistance workout typically 3 days a week. All compound lifts, (Squats, bench presses, deadlifts, overhead presses, lat pulldowns, rows, and body weight exercises like planks, reverse crunches and pushups). I also typically cycle between 75 and 100 miles a week. depending upon schedule.

My Current weight is 247 lbs. I am approximately 6' 7" tall so that weight is not too far away from a good BMI for me, if one was to put a lot of stock in BMI numbers. My most recent cholesterol was 181 total, my B/P was 124/74 adn my resting H/R is 60 bpm. My most recent VO2 max calculations put me at 39.6, which doesn't make me an athlete, but does make me normal, which ain't bad for a former smoker of 25 years.

Could I have done all this on my own without surgery? Yes, I'm pretty sure eventually I could have. Here is the thing. I'm 45. I have dieted for years and yo-yo'ed for years. Eventually I probably would have figured it out. The question is, would I have done it before I had something drastic happen? Add it up, Obesity, high b/p, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, diabetes... tick, tick, tick... can you hear the time bomb? My two daughters are not yet married, and I would like to see that happen.

Okay kids, for the other parts of me here, I'm leaving the link in my sig temporarily to my old journal is anyone wants to see where I was, or see what kind of irreverent, slightly off kilter person I am in all other things. I would also love to hear from anyone who is curious about the bypass. I will be more than happy to share my experiences so far and answer anyone's questions about the procedure. I have anumber of them in my family now, so I'm pretty well versed in the operation at this point.

Hey cabbie, think I must have joined on your break :) Had a sneak peek at your old diary and you've come very far so hope you're incredibly proud of yourself! Very inspiring--Thank you for sharing your story ^_^

Looks like you joined right after I went missing! I'm glad you stopped in, and look forward to seeing you in the future.

Workout today:

Seated leg presses - 5x5x300 (+10)

Overhead presses - 5x5x65

RDL's - 1x5x225

Lat pulldowns 3xFx165 (7/6/5) (+5lbs)

Planks - 3x45 sec

Cardio - 12.1 miles spinning, 144 bpm avg h/r

Went to Olive Garden tonight. By frame of reference to where I am now. I ordered the Pork Milanese. Got it with the soup. Brought home 2/3 of the soup in a container. Took 2/3 of the main dish and packaged it into 2 separate containers. I now have 3 containers = 3 meals for a total of 4 meals out of the dinner. Bear in mind this used to be 1 meal, and I would also get the breadsticks with Alfredo dipping sauce. I ate two bites of the breadstick, no sauce.

WOW! Sounds like you've made a lot of lifestyle changes and have come a long ways already! Good luck with your continueing weight loss journey!

Hi Tig! Nice to see you here! I've been at this for a very long time, and ended up taking a different route from many, but I'm happy with my choices so far.

Hey Cabbie, just thought I'd pop in and say hellllllooooo and welcome back. I must have also joined whilst you were elsehwere! Sounds like you are in a really positive place and have lost loads of weight and congrats on the new healthy lifestyle.

I'm jealous of the amount of cycling you manage to fit in - getting back on my road bike is one of my objectives as I live in a really beautiful part of the UK (with huge amounts of hills!! They don't call it the Peak District for nothing!).

Anyhows, see you around!

Hey JJ! I love cycling! The only other sport that I enjoy almost as much is kayaking, but it's more difficult to fit into my schedule.

Anyway, figured I'd add in a before after set. The first pic was me at 389 lbs. The second pic I am probably 265ish? I don't have anything more recent yet in a full body pic, but I'm working on it. I'm more toned now with less overhang in the stomach area now. That shot was taken about 2 months ago.

Wow that's an incredible weight loss. Congrats.
It's amazes me how little we need to eat compared to what we used to eat as proved by your Olive Garden meal. When I cook pastas now I make about a third of what I used to and there's usually still some left over. I wonder now how I ever managed to stuff so much food in me.

Hey Cabbie welcome back!

I came back here about a month ago. Into the same struggles with eating again, but I'm trying to take a longer term view with the whole thing.

Congrats on the weight loss and fitness gain. Well done!

Those are some pretty amazing before and after shots! Well done!

So based on your avvie.... Do you also ride motorcycle?

Yes I do. I have a Honda cruiser for now, although my wife would like it very much if we could upgrade to something more touring oriented (read that a bike with a couch seat on the back), like a Gold Wing or a Voyager. Eventually... I'm not ready to spend that kind of money just yet. The bike in the pic is a Triumph Thunderbird. I have a thing for Triumphs...

Screwball day today.

My daughter was tired this morning (she works with me), so I drove her home, but then was supposed to go back out for a Dr's appt. It was raining buckets though, standing water on the highway, rush hour traffic and the doctor is 1 1/2 hour away in a good commute... I cancelled and was read the riot act for it. I'll go next month.

Course this meant that my daughter's car was still in the parking lot and she needed a ride back tonight (she works a longer shift than me - seniority has it's perks ), so I had to drive her back. I did get a short workout in, just 12.3 miles of cycling, weights tomorrow.

Bought myself a little foolish thing for vacation. The resort we are going to in Jamaica is clothing optional , so I needed a cover up that was easy to throw on for the areas of the resort that clothing was required. Got a small sarong for those occasions. More stylish than a beach towel...:biggrinjester:

My husband has got an over 30 year old Bultaco (which is a Spanish make bike) tucked away at the back of the garage. We used to have so much fun with it as you could ride it on any type of ground so we had great fun exploring off track places. He keeps talking about getting it mended but never gets round to it.
LOL are you going to post pics of you in the sarong:eek:

Sweetie... the pictures from those vacations are left to the imagination... What happens in Jamaica, stays in Jamaica...

My first motorcycle was an old bultaco Matador that my dad traded some work to a buddy for. Beat it around in the woods for a while as a kid.

I love my sarong, and its great being places where thats all you need to wear...just had a boating holiday where it got used lots :)

When is your trip? Jamaica sounds like such a great place to go.

Ana

6'7" in a sarong. THATS A LOT OF SARONG wouldnt ya think??? lol

Great journal Cabbie! And well done with the weight loss.

We're bout the same age....but you got about 5 inches on me.....(easy ladies).

I had a motorbike, (Yamaha Seca 900) but sold it for something more stable....Now I'm into Jeeps :D (Still fun with the top off)

I'll keep in touch.

And good luck with the weight loss.

Cabbie, I also love kayaking - this summer I bought a Sevylor Hudson inflatable to explore all the canal systems and lakes around where I live, and with more time, to drive up to the Lake District and do some proper big camping kayaking trips. Originally I liked sea kayaking best but with a 5 year old daughter, I got to be somewhat less adventurous! I've been sailing mostly this year though which has proven to be a good work out - you wouldn't think it but all that hauling boats around, launching, rigging sails etc... not to mention what you have to do when you capsize - definitely works muscles that I'd forgotten existed.

As for motorbikes, ecky beat me to the question!! I had a 1953 BSA Bantam which I lovingly restored but sold when I got pregnant unfortunately. I've had my eye on a Triumph Bonnie for quite a while now - can't decide whether to go truly classic and get a 1950s/60s model or to go for one of their new modern models - probably the Thruxton cafe racer style (being a lady, the colour and "look" of the thing is most important!!! hehe).

The difference in pictures is amazing - and a real testimont to the hard work you must have put in. Well done!! Especially if you are now two more months down the line!

Clothing optional:eek2:!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I would spend too much time perving over men!!! hahahaha Ladies definitely aren't meant to say things like that...but what the heck, we're all thinking it!!

I think there'd be a lot more snickering than perving going on!!!!
