The Journey 2 A New Me!

Hey everyone! First off let me say that I knew for some time that I was overweight, but I was rather shocked to see that I was actually considered obese after doing the BMI calculator. Talk about an eye opener!

(42 yrs old... 5'6")

So anyway, my journey actually started a couple weeks ago when I found out my wife wanted a divorce (and no not because of my weight) and made me think about a lot of things... especially my weight. We have been married for 10 yrs and when we first met, I was around normal weight. So then thinking about trying to find another relationship I was left wondering who on earth is going to want to date me and my fat behind?

So I put my foot down and decided it was time for a lifestyle change. I immediately stopped all soda and all junk food. My typical daily intake was around a half dozen sodas, Mcdonalds double quarter pounder w/cheese, large fries and large coke and for dinner I would sometimes have the same thing and then most nights I was sitting watching movies while eating a quart of icecream, then various snacks throughout the day like chips and stuff and not a stitch of excercise.

So now I drink water about 95% of the time and on occasion I will have a diet coke or coke zero to break the monotony and just recently picked up crystal light to have now and then as well. For meals I start off the morning with either a low fat yogurt or raisin bran, lunch I have any one of the following: turkey wrap from wawa, grilled chicken sandwich from mcdonalds or a salad from either. Then dinners I just picked up a variety of healthy choice and lean cuisine micro dinners. And then once a week I have a single treat, like one day I will have the double quarter pounder taken off the roll and no fries with a diet coke and then sometimes I will just get a small fries to go with my grilled chicken sandwich.

For excercise I use my treadmill and originally started off doing 1/2 hr fast walk in the morning and then again at night and sometimes toss in an extra 1/2 hr inbetween if I had nothing else to do. I then bumped those up to 1 hr morning and night and of course was doing this every other day and then I came across a treadmill training program which does intervals of walking and jogging and love the stuffing out of it. And just tonight found another interval workout for walking only which is for 45 mins and adjust the speed and incline during it. By this weekend I am going to setup my weight bench so I can work on upper body on the days Im not doing the cardio.

I only have 1 pic right now but of course will update when the time comes... (excuse the matress... my computer/workout room has been made my computer/workout/bedroom room since divorce and still living together)

re journey to a new me

Hi there..

I just wanted to say I posted tonight for the first time like you! It appears we are both just starting out- good luck to you, seems like you have a plan in action, I'm working on mine right now.. and too much of a coward to post a pic yet! lol..

I plan on following your progress :) good luck :)

Hey now... take another look at my pic ( :eek2: ), do you think it was easy for me to post that up for the world to see? ... Now go post up yours :biggrinjester:

Hi and welcome to the forum! Good on ya for deciding to change your life and improve your health - and for posting your B4 pic! It will serve to inspire as you drop your pounds, which you will most certainly do if you keep up with your exercise and cutting out all junk food (esp. soda).:smash:

On another note, sorry to hear about your marital woes. Regardless of the situation, it is a lot to process emotionally after 10 years together. I hope that your commitment to improving your health branches out into every part of your life, and that you reap all of the benefits. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TO!

Best wishes on your journey :driving:

Thanks ABBA, appreciate the kind words and vote of confidence and as for the B4 pic... I actually also use it as my deskptop as a reminder of "what" I am now and "who" I want to be in the end... which of course is "the real me" :)

Small Update: Weighed myself this morning and I was 199lbs!! WooT!! I know its only 8lbs in 2 weeks but I had it set in my head that before or by this coming Sunday I would be under the 200 mark finally... so I really felt good about myself today.

Now Im off to start dragging all my free weights and bench up from the basement and get ready for that part of my workout schedule which Im starting this Sunday. :hurray:

I am sorry to hear about your divorce and wish you all the best for the future.

You are doing all the right things regarding your diet. One thing my husband and I have changed to is eating hard boiled eggs for breakfast and low fat/low sugar yogurt. My husband has lost a lot of weight doing this, it seems to work for him, just thought to mention it. I also feel lighter when I eat like this for breakfast.

Its funny if you ever watched the series Burn Notice on tv they are always eating yogurt and the actors are super skinny. Its become a joke between me and my hubs that if we eat as much yog as they do we will become skinny like them. Sometimes I add crushed walnuts and some granola to my yogurt to bulk it up a bit.

Adding weights seems to play a big part in weight loss. I learned recently on here the more muscle I build the more likely my body will become a fat burning machine. I was just going to stick to my eliptical but since yesterday started using my weights. My hubs also uses weights a lot more than doing cardio and he is definately becoming more "tight" with his body. So you are definately on the right track with adding weights.

Keep us posted with your progress. I know you can do it.

Wow, you're off to a good start! I can't wait to see the after pictures. Good luck to you, even though I don't think you need it!

HEYYY
Just wanted to check in with ya.. see how you're doing???

Sorry haven't been around much, things have been a little crazy to say the least. But I am still on track, actually way ahead of track. I expected to take close to 5 months to get to my goal and it looks like I might be able to accomplish it within another 2 months.

4 weeks in and I am now 192 lbs! Feeling very good... except for about a week into my weight lifting my triceps were downright killing me and had to take a break... seems I was pusing myself a touch too much. Stills sticking to cardio and all though but cut back a notch on the lifting.

Also ordered this posture support brace to see if I can correct the rounded shoulders I have had for so many years. Only other thing going on which had me very confused was that since weighing myself daily everything was looking good and then I took a single night off of watching my eating habits and had a little more then usual but not over doing it and then when I weighed myself it said I was 194... how do I go from 192 on one day to 194 the next??? But anyway... back to 192 and I guess I won't be doing that again lol

Hi!
Glad to hear you are doing so well!

As far as weighing in at 192 then the next day 194-- the same thing happened to me last time I was losing weight... I was weighing myself too much. Now, I make sure I only weigh myself once a week on Monday mornings, same place, same clothes, same scale.. it's the only way (I think) that I can keep an accurate record of exactly what I'm losing, and so I don't drive myself crazy going up and down all week....

I am too addicted to the scale... we have one of those digital ones that shows like 192.8, so needless to say if I weigh in one day at for example: 192.8 and the next day I am 192.7... that still gives me extra motivation!! LOL

Well I hit a brick wall with losing and I think it was due to not enough calorie intake. So I gained a couple pounds by increasing my calorie intake and have started losing again. As of this morning I was @ 187 lbs... so thats 20 lbs in almost 1 1/2 months. Was hoping to be at the half way mark by now, which would be 180 and probably would be if not for my mistake with lowering my intake too much.

Will post pics once I get to 180... so far I have noticed my legs starting to look more toned, my inner thighs aren't really rubbing together at all like they use to when I was on the treadmill, my double chin has started vanishing, pants that were very tight to button at the waist are getting easier and easier to do so and I noticed when I was cutting my back yard I have a TON more energy... I was lucky to get half the backyard done and feeling like I was dying and now I knocked out the entire backyard with barely any effort.
