The Iron Turtle Goes To Work

Greetings everyone, I am the Iron Turtle, and this journal will track my weight loss, my gym activities, and just some basic life-in-general moments. I'll probably post up a basic eating plan as well, once I get that situated to my liking.

Some basic info, since it's been a few weeks since I posted on the Intro board. I'm 26 years old, 6 feet 4 inches tall, and I weigh 381 pounds. I'm a big guy, and I've been that way most of my life. I hit 250 pounds in the 6th grade, and I kept right on going. After high school, I got up to about 380-ish (not sure, never weighed myself then). Started working out like a madman with a friend of mine and got my weight down to about 275 after 18 months or so of hard work. Life happened, as it always will, and over the course of the following 5 years I gained back everything that I lost.

Which brings us to today. I'm starting my new way of life tomorrow. I weigh 381 pounds right now, and my first goal is to weigh less than 300 pounds again. So, I need to lose 82 pounds, and I'm giving myself a deadline of 6 months to do it in. I think that's aggressive, but certainly not impossible.

Right now, I want to get my weight under 300 pounds, but I'm not sure what I want my final goal weight to be. I've always been so large (250 lbs @ 11) that it will really be a step-by-step process to see exactly where I feel the most comfortable with myself. When I originally lost a lot of weight and got down to 275, I was more confident and happier with myself, but I still had a pretty fair bit of fat to lose, especially around my waist. I wasn't eating right by any means. The only reason I was losing weight at all was because of how hard I was working out. This time, I'm going to be smarter about it, with healthy eating mixed in with the workouts.

I have some other goals as well beyond just my weight loss goals. They concern working out. I like to use free weights when I work out, so my other goals concern that and the "Big 3." That would be the bench press, the squat, and the deadlift. Currently, I can do the following:

Bench press - 225 x 5 reps
Squat - 265 x 5 reps
Deadlift - 275 x 5 reps

In 6 months, on August 3rd, I would like to be doing:

Bench press - 315 x 5 reps
Squat - 405 x 5 reps
Deadlift - 425 x 5 reps

Again, aggressive, but attainable.

My basic plan? I'm going to be lifting weights 3 days a week and doing cardo 3 days a week and having 1 day of rest and recovery. No, I'm not following the BFL plan. It's a powerlifting workout plan. I'll post more on it later if anyone is interested. The cardio will be moderate intensity, mostly walking on treadmills at an incline and sometimes a stair climber or a stationary bike for a little variety. As far as eating, I'm planning on aiming for about 3200 calories coming from good, clean, healthy food. Lots of veggies, fruits, and non-processed food. I'll be keeping a hand written food journal to keep track of everything that I eat. I think that I, like most people, will automatically eat a little better if I know that I have to own up to everything that I eat and write it down.

Alright, I think this is long enough for a 1st post. I'll be posting my weight every Saturday starting on the 10th.

Here we go.

Welcome to the forums, I think your calorie plan and goals sound pretty solid. Some of your particular workout techniques might not please everyone here, but if you can do them and have a good time doing them; it's a good start and any fine-tuning can be done later on.
Creating a diary was a GREAT motivational help for me, and I hope you benefit from it, as well.
I look forward to watching you progress, and I love your weight loss ticker!

That's true, I haven't noticed too many other people around here interested in powerlifting. But that's fine. At the end of the day, most of the people on here would probably like to have a bodyfat percentage under 20% or so, right? Me too. Now, the paths we take to get there may be vastly different, but, in the end, we all want the same thing.

I promise not to preach about the wonders of weight lifting and I don't expect others to preach to me about how I need to be doing 7 days a week of cardio at such and such heart rate. I like powerlifting. It's one of the few things that makes me want to go to the gym, so that's what I'm gonna do. With other people it might running a six minute mile or an aerobics class, and that's cool. I say do whatever it is that floats your boat.

Iron_Turtle- I think powerlifting is awesome. If it gets you to work out, then do it. I lift weights too- obviously not as heavy as you do (I'd kill myself if I tried to lift 225) and do cardio 5 to 6 times a week. Good luck to you on your journey. :)

Preach away, amigo; it's your diary :D
Powerlifting is a great way to drop bodyfat and build lean body mass, and going to the gym is very important in accomplishing our goals. I am firmly of the belief that diet and exercise are more effective than just diet alone. I am actually very interested in seeing the results you get; I'm not a fitness pro, and was kinda tired when I posted earlier (just got back from a long, good hike) so I think it came out a litle bit wrong.
I think cardio and weight training are both needed in order to build and maintain the muscle we need. I'm not a small guy either, and feel like we probably have a similar build (I'm only 6' tall, but have a lot of muscle) and we both have a similar attitude toward our "goal weight". I am just trying to get down to a 40" waist, or thereabouts; you just want to get down to a comfortable body size and are taking a similar attitude.
I love seeing all of the different ways people are able to accomplish their goals, it provides me with a lot of motivation to get to my own; I have already proven I can't do this on my own.
Seriously, preach your methods man; this is YOUR place.

The amount itself isn't very important. As long as you are pushing yourself and slowly increasing the amount that you lift, you are making progress, which in turn leads to more strength and LBM and a healthier you.

Thanks for the welcome. I'll take all the good luck I can get.

Good luck Iron Turtle. I'm impressed by the lifting you are already able to do.

I'm just focusing on cardio, mixed with some strength training & flexibilty, but can imagine one day pumping iron.

Go for it!

Alright, Day 1 is going well. I'm eating clean and healthy, no junk food or fast food. I'm probably not going to start my weight lifting program until Thursday. I've got some issues to work out with my gym, plus I want to lift on a Thursday/Saturday/Monday schedule.

I took my dog for a 30 minute walk earlier today, and I'm planning on getting in another 30 minutes in another couple hours, just before dinner. It's certainly good for me, and it's good for the little guy as well. He's put on a little bit of weight himself lately. I'm convinced that if I let him he would lay in bed and sleep all day long. Lazy little mutt. :)

Welcome to your journal/diary! While, I have never been a power lifter, there was a time when I was lifting weights quite frequently and loved squats and leg presses. I'm hoping to get back to those days after I get some lbs off that I have put on.

I really would like to get a dog, but I just don't have time to devout to a puppy right now. It's good that you are able to get in shape and help your four legged friend do the same!

Good Luck!
