The Fat Guy Starts His Journey

Hello everyone,

My name is Jay. I always told myself "Weight loss forums are for losers" so I never tried one. My weight never really effected my life. I still had friends, and did all the running and jumping regular size kids did. Now im 21 and 450lbs. I have a great job, good friends, my own place, and good investments. I have all these good things going on in my life, but no one to share it with. I have tried my hardest with women, but in the end, my weight is too much for them to overlook. One girl told me "If you were normal size and ugly, I wouldn't mind at all, but I could never be with someone who let themselves go like that." Ive always struck out with the girls, and I was always told if I wasnt fat, id be their "dream guy". Friends and family always told me "You should find someone to love you fat or not" but I realized in this society thats dominated by image and sex, its not going to happen. I'm constantly friendzoned and im tired of it.

My biggest problem is my laziness and lack of will power when it comes to food. Im too lazy to drive to the gym everyday. If I get to the gym, I will work hard, but getting there is the challenge. Food. I love eating bad stuff. I need taste, I love tasty bad food. Its destroying me, but I cant help myself.

I want to be able to ride on a plane comfortably, shop at regular stores, not break beds, get on amusement park rides, and find someone to share all my success with. I want to lose this weight badly, but it seems I can't diet properly. Im either too tired from working, or too lazy to cook. I dont want gastric bypass surgery at 21, I want to do this the right way.

My goal is to reach 300 pounds by July. I have a vacation to Flordia, and atleast at 300 pounds id be able to get on SOME rides at universal studios, not all of them. My doctor said its possible, but it will take hard work and dedication. I want to change my life.

Welcome to the forum, Jay! If you haven't already, try starting a diary in the diary section. It's a great way to get motivation from the other members here. Congrats on taking the first step! Good luck and see ya around! :)

hi Jay

A warm welcome to you. The best part of this forum is that it is got earnest people. I think this is mainly due to the sensitivity of the common issue of being fat. Thus it does have a good mix of losers, winners and people who are trying and getting there.

What you have described is a very common situation with a lot of us. It takes a huge effort to get into the mental state of diet and exercise. The physical part is the easiest when one starts. You have to start and not bother weighing or measuring yourself for a while. Just concentrate on the regime and one fine day you will look at the mirror and you will surprise yourself.

So get started and Best of Luck...remember it is not as difficult as it seems.

Yeah its just the mountain seems so high to climb that it almost makes me not want to try. I know the time will pass whether i lose the weight or not, and im not going to live to see the 40s if I continue my destructive path. Its hard to do this at a young age. I just dont want to waste my 20s because I was too fat to enjoy it. I think ill actually be able to do it this time.I know how to exercise, I just need to learn how to eat right. If anyone has any suggestion for meals, or cookbooks itd be appreciated. The only thing I know how to cook is hotdogs. My cellphone calls someone to do the cooking for me.

uh oh....no I do not use a cookbook so cant help on that front. I am sure a visit to the local bookstore [dont go online] will unearth something. I think it is very important that you start cooking yourself because that way you know what you are putting into the food you eat. But having said that, you can still eat out but just watch what you eat.

But apart from the regular meals you can eat a lot of smaller meals which do not require you to cook. Include a lot of fruits in your diet. Eat Muesli. Make salads.....

The rules are simple...I am sure you know them already:
- avoid simple carbs; white breads, potatoes, etc
- avoid fatty foods: cream, chocolates, icecream, oily/greasy foods, etc
- cut off sugar completely in all forms
- do not drink any soda at all.
- eat leaner meats
- eat small meals all the time [every 2 to 3 hours]
- never allow yourself to feel hungry
- never overeat...get up from a meal feeling that you could eat another if you needed to.
- eat slowly...chew on your food and taste every bit of it
- drink a lot of water and always before starting a meal
- do not drink fruit juice...eat the fruit
- Most Important: Treat yourself to your favourite foods every once in a while, but it should be a treat...train yourself to appreciate quality and not quantity

you have to learn to take pride in abstaining...i refused all foods my friends used to offer and made a point of the same...in a way they were forced to be a part of my weightloss :) ...there was a lot of fun poked at the onset..but slowly they got trained too and they used to make an effort to specially get foods that were acceptable to me.

In a nutshell...just go for it..it is all in the mind

Must See places to visit on this weight-loss journey.

Hi Jay,

Glad you are here.

There are so many fun and exciting places to visit on this weight-loss journey. One of the "Must See" places to go is Mind-set. Nepolian Hill once said, "What the mind can conceive and you believe, you will achieve." You are a third of the way there already. You have conceived your thought. Now you need to believe it.:) We can help.

Another "Must See" is Nutrition. Why? Because, for one, when your body is properly nourished you will lose the cravings. Cravings kill diets. One of the fastest ways to start improving your nutrition is with a natural vitamin. You want to choose a natural vitamin because it is more likely be absorbed by your body.

A third "Must See" is water. Drink it! The general rule of thumb is, 8-8oz glasses a day. That has been amended for overweight people. It has been recommended that for every 10 lbs. you are overweight you need to drink an additional 8oz of water. For many people this is a real chore. Just think about it though. What would happen to your car if you did not keep oil in it. The water you drink is the oil in your car.

Jen Renee is right. A diary would be great. You can journal everything. What is a good journey without a journal?

Wishing you well! :seeya:

Iv'e found that the bigger you are, initially, the easier the weight will come off. But yeah, it is about getting back what you put in.
I have to agree, don't waste your 20's! I'm 26, and while I feel I havn't wasted mine, I often think "man, if I was about 30kgs less I would have enjoyed everything way more".
Some tips that have helped me recently:
1. DONT drink calories! I was basically adding the equivalent of another meal each day, just by having a can of coke, an energy drink and maybe a juice/another fizzy drink each day. To me, this is the easiest place to cut down on calories because they don't give you any/very little nutritional value
2. Motivation - you need to know WHY you wanna do this. When you've done a 20min walk and your back is all sweaty, and your tired and you wanna stop, you need to know why you're doing this. It helps you push through. So make sure you're very aware of why you are doing this. Pretty good motivation though, in one years time, you will NEVER be friendzoned again...

3. Make a start today - no time like the present. Start of with something easy, and gradually build up. You won't be able to do everything you want to do right away, but by even walking 30 min 5 times a week, in a month you'll be suprised at how well things go for you (assuming you eat well of course).

4. Learn - Calorie Input/Output is something that is SO vital, and it pains me to admit I only really learnt about it in the last 4 months. Your body needs X amount of calories each day to function properly and maintain the same weight (obviously more for heavier people). If your daily calorie input/output is LESS than your Calories needed to maintain weight, then you will be losing weight. You can make sure its less by a combination of eating less, and expending more energy - working out.
For example, my body needs around 2400calories perday to function. If I eat 2000 calories (a decent amount ina day), and work out and burn 600 calores, I would be 1000 in deficit, and would end up losing weight. Do that every day for a month, and you've lost quite a bit of weight.

Hope this helps a bit...I like to see myself as a fairly normal guy, I don't have a SUPER busy lifestyle, I work, enjoy the odd drink and still enjoy the odd hamburger, but it really is 'what you put in, you get out'. Go hard man!
