The "Fat Gene"

Been a little about the so called "Fat Gene" in the media lately and was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this ...?

:jump:

I assume you are talking about the ob gene related to the production of leptin?

My thoughts?

Its a very interesting subject. ;)
I don't have the time right now to go into it as I have to be going. But, Steve is da man when it comes to leptin. Anything I know on it I'm sure Steve can state many times better with much more info.

within reason, im sure its true, and im sure it makes all of 100 calories a day difference, but every man and his dog will claim that they have the 'fat gene' and its 'not my fault' that they are fat.
This debate has been going on for decades. Im no doctor but i can tell you that i was sure i had a 'fat gene' or 'thyroid problem' or some other reason for being fat. Anything but accepting the truth that i was shoveling in calorie laden feasts into my own mouth and killing myself :)

Ditto that...

I also never ate fast food or anything anyone would consider typical fare of the obese person -I ate generally healthy foods - It wasn't until I started measuring portions that the lightbulb went off.

Excuses are too easy to come by... everyone has them... excuses need to be replaced...

Yeah I think we all have a pair of fat "genes" that we don't fit in anymore.

I'm so lame...I couldn't resist that one.

I don't beleive any of us are destined to remain fat if we choose not to. I just need to find the damn power. Of course, you need to see a doctor and make sure that no conditions exist that keep fat on (thyroid for ex), I have yo yo ed for years, and am determined this time

The more I say it, the more I beleive it

My calculator says that 100 calories a day would make someone gain 10.428571428571428571428571428571 pounds per year.

So from 15 to 25 years old this would put on 104.28571428571428571428571428571 pounds :)

I agree with you that most people who claim to have it are just in denial, but for the people who do have it it could be serious.

To quote my own quote:

I had the realization that a 100 calorie a day difference may only matter until they got big enough to burn an extra 100 calories a day just from their BMR. But if they didint want to get bigger, they still have to burn that extra 104.28571428571428571428571428571 pounds per 10 years.

I love my calculator :p

I think there is a genetic component to adipositas (I am pretty darn sure, I read over 20 papers on leptin etc...), but to eat badly and not work out can 1.) make adipositas worse and 2.) create it in those who were not genetically predisposed.
It is like being predisposed to cancer: if you live a healthier life you may not get it ever even if you have the predisposition, if you smoke like a chimney, ec... you may get it even if you are not genetically predisposed.
In class we drew this curve where genetics and environment feed into, once you have a certain level (either genetically or environmentally) you get the "disease" (but it can be used for adipositas as well). So for example someone with just 1 "fat gene" who eats crap and exercises next to nothing may get it before the guy who has 10 fat genes but eats healthily and runs every morning.
