"The Fat Burning Zone?!"

I was told at the gym last night that there is such a thing as a "fat burning zone". It is where you are not running full out and your heart is pumping out of your chest. But when you are running around 65% where you are slightly out of breathe but are able to talk.
I am now in the cutting stage and have mixed in a lot of cardio in with my weight training. My gym instructor told me that if I sprint and work to hard then it can actually break down muscle mass and lose muscle/bulk. He said that sprinting will make me fitter but it wont make you look better. Thats when he suggested jogging at 65% after every weight session on an incline of 3% for 20mins. Also said that I should wear a sweatshirt while jogging because it was better for burning fat (I usually just wear a vest).
Just thought I would run it past you lot and get your opinions?

Here's the deal, cited from Understanding the Science Behind INterval Training

This is what you get in the "fat burning zone:"
As an example, even at the upper range of 6 calories per minute, one hour at this intensity yields 360 calories expended. Since only 85% of these calories are fat derived, we've burned 306 fat calories or 34 grams of fat (1 gram of fat is worth 9 calories). In terms of weight control, that's not too bad since 34 grams of fat can be a substantial portion of one's daily intake, but from the standpoint of fat reduction, over 11 hours of this exercise would be necessary to burn off one pound of fat (about 3500 calories per pound).

its a bit of a myth...at least fairly misunderstood.

aerobic activity can burn fat.
anaerobic activity can not.

but this doesn't mean that yhou should exercise slowly to 'stay in teh fat burning zone'. you'll burn fewer total calories, but about 50% can be burned fat. if you did more intense cardio, you could burn more calories and more fat calories too, but the percentage drops. BUT ITS STILL MORE FAT AND CALORIES BURNED THAN SLOW CARDIO.

Slow cardio is great if you have to do it first thing int he morning before you eat.

if cardio is done in the evening, keep it shorter, and more intense.

I only do my cardio @65% of my MHR only because it works for me.. I've had my breath anaylized and that's where I was burning the most fat after around 25min..

^^This is where your tax dollars go, to universities' complex equipment so I can burn fat effectively, thanks. :D

What about the wearing a sweater when doing cardio (after your weights) part? Does that actually have any benifit?
