"The Biggest Loser" - How healthy is their program?

Hi all, I was just curious as to how participants in "The Biggest Loser" TV show are able to lose so much weight each week in a healthy manner?

A season is currently airing in Australia and I've been watching it every night for months now :D I noticed that their diets fall within 1000-1500 calories per day, and these guys weigh over 250 lb. They also apparently exercise 6 hours a day.

How do they do it without completely destroying their bodies?

Hi,
I've got some info on calorie deficit on my blog. I dont believe the biggest loser is a good way about going about weight. Sure some of them keep it off once their off the show but a lot do put it back on. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes like with physchologists and so on. For example, a healthy weight loss plan might involve a calorie deficit of 500 per day. It's a slower process, but it helps. I'm also in Australia and see some of the show, I'm not sure if you've seen previous contestants have had to get a lot of plastic surgery to remove all of the left over skin from losing weight so fast.

With most of those programmes the participants are at a level of obesity where the benefits of losing weight outweigh the need to eat a healthy diet which is why they have a ‘drop weight as fast as possible using any possible means’ kind of approach. I don’t think the massive calorie deficits and excessive training are suitable for someone looking to drop a dress size or lose a bit of a beer gut though.

I've also been told that the more weight you have to lose, the easier it is to lose it in larger amounts. Probably because at this point any exercise at all will make a huge difference and your body really doesn't want to be that heavy. So for example, there are two people, same height and age; one weighs 400 pounds, one weighs 180. If they begin a diet and exercise program, the heavy person will have a far easier time losing say 100 pounds than the lighter person might have losing 40 (assuming they both followed their programs of course).

On that show, they wake up, eat, train, nap, eat, train, eat train.. all in a day..
and Jillian gives her team fat burners.

And, weeks 1 and 2 they always lose a bunch... by the end of the show people are losing .5lbs, or gaining weight sometimes.

ANd, its a tv show. They pick 'good contestants' not average ones, all in the name of ratings...not health.
