Thai Style beef Salad

Again - not a fan of the rabbit food but this was quite tasty..

8 -10 ounces sirloin

1 head of bibb lettuce (or boston lettuce)
2 large handfuls arugula
1/2 english cucumber (seedless) halved and sliced
2 shallots, sliced thin
1 package grape tomatoes, halved
1 hanful cilantro, chopped

Dressing
3 thai chilis, seeded and sliced thinly (or one largish jalapeno)
3 large cloves garlic, sliced thin
1 tsp brown sugar
2 tbs fish sauce
Juice of 2 limes

Trim off any visible fat from steak, broil the steak until medium-rare.

Cool and slice thin into bite sized pieces.

Mix garlic, chiles, fish sauce, lime juice, and sugar in a small bowl.

Add the sliced meat and toss with the cucumbers, tomatoes, arugula and shallots.

Make a bed of the lettuce on a serving plate. Place the beef on top. Garnish with cilantro.

Makes 1 large dinner salad and enough left over for lunch the next day.

I make this all the time. I usually skip the lettuce, I like lettuce just fine but I find that the beef salad without the lettuce is more appealing to me. This is a great recipe to perk up any grilled meat, grilled shrimp is really good.

I posted a similar thai style chicken salad with a very similar dressing.. it's a nice light dressing that's got a ton of flavor

it's be good with swordfish or pork tenderloin or even jazz up turkey breast..

I agree, it's the dressing that makes it and it is extremely versatile. Believe it or not, with a little peanut butter mixed into it it makes a great dressing for a thai style coleslaw. It was recipes like the one you posted that kept food interesting for me when I first started my life changing journey. Now I fall back on recipes like this because it tastes great. But in the beginning stuff like this was key to keeping me on track because I never felt like I was missing out.

Thanks...

I work in IT to pay the bills but food is my absolute passion.. and some day before I'm older tahn I am - i will go back to school and do something with that passion... I've got a few different ideas... The message Id love to get out to the world is that healthy eating doesn't mean fat free this, low fat that, tasteless crap, that healthy food can be full of flavor and taste good.. (this is where i get called a food snob :D but I'm ok with that :D

Dumb questions...where does one find Thai chilis? And what exactly is fish sauce?

The recipe sounds great...but I'm culinarily(sp?) challenged. I was raised in a home where meat and potatoes were king and vegetables were cooked to mush.

Fish sauce is found in the "international foods" aisle -generally the same place that La Choy products are sold right next to the soy sauce - this isa fairly common product these days so if the store has soy sauce -they should have fish sauce.

Thai Chilis, if your store has them, would be in the fresh produce section with the rest of the peppers... If you don't like spice -you can leave them out with no harm.

and if you don't want to bother with all the dressing ingredients.. there's a few companies that sell a ginger soy dressing (newman's own makes a low fat one that's quite good for a bottled dressing) that would work very well..
