Tense neck while doing crunches

Shuld i have a tense neck when doing crunches? cause i cannot help tensing my neck whilst doing them and so i`m unable to complete them
My neck tenses up quite a lot

this i guess is a very common thing among crunchers

i had the problem long back

use should check the way you breathe during the crunches(breathe in going up; breathe out going down)

other problems could be your hand placement behind your neck
check the end of this article
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/issa112.htm
you can place your hand on the chest as well

also there is this forum discussing the same issue has some good info

i cant understand i tought that u breath out as u going up and beath in as u go out isnt it?

hello titanium i think u s hould not press ur head toward ur chest too much with ur hands while u doing the crunch
another thing u can do is using a towel underneath ur neck then lift the towel with ur hands and dont put too much strain on ur neck
good luck

Yes Jelly, that is correct. you should exhale as you crunch (go up) and inhale as you return to the starting position (go down)

I tried my 1st ones and it seemed like a success, :) :) However what confuses me is.

I wouldnt think of myself to have good ab strength(apart from doing sit-ups for a mediumish period i dont do anything with them), as its the 1st time i did these crunches, I tried doing them the difficult way with my hands behind my head touching my opposite shoulders. I did 15 and i i didnt find it hard(i didnt flex abs becuase it was 1st time doing them and tbh i wasnt sure if i was flexing them or not) I also stayed up for 5 seconds
So i did another 3 sets all of 15 and i`m not getting dat tired, i took roughly 5sec brake between each set
Should i do more per set? rather than keep it 15 and end up doing 5sets to make sure muscle is overloaded?

Since i could have continued doing a few more i`m under the impression i just wasted my time as i didnt overload muscles.

So i was looking at 30 crunches for 2-3sets, or mybe 25 crunches 3 sets.

Or could it be i didnt go up high enough and hence found it easy?

is it wrong to do it the other way round since i follow this patern in all my exercises and sort off help me get power in the reps

i started a new thread breathing during exercise, to discuss the issue

it seem breathing has a lot to do with stabilising the spine and so on and would'nt affects your strength goals much

so i think you should pay attention to breathing in heavy core exercises like the weighted squats and deadlifts etc
