So yeah . . . I registered on a weight loss site to see if i would help me lose weight at all. A lot of the people I surround myself with are in very good shape, but most of them are terrible at reccomending ways to lose weight and don't provide me with the kind of support that I think I need. I'm thinking about joining a gym over the summer and getting a personal trainer for a more hands on approach for the whole thing, but for now I'm relying on the internet for advice.

I'm a dude, 18, turning 19 on the twenty-third, and I've wanted to lose weight for about ... 7-8 years now. Yeah, everything from Middle School to now haven't exactly been bitchin' times.

EDIT: Which part of the forum should I go to for advice on weight loss specifically. I'm about 220 lbs and I don't suffer from any kind of diseases or anything like that I'm just kind of fat and miserable about it. I know that sounds pessimistic but I'm just saying what comes immediately to mind. I don't have to lose weight for any other reason other than it makes me miserable, I don't need to lose it for work or health reasons (at least not yet).

The only way I can recommend to lose weight is through regular exercise and better eating habits; nothing too restrictive or intense that you won’t be able to keep up over a long period of time. Depending on how much weight you want to lose, and how much muscle you want to build, you could be at this for a very long time. That’s another thing you’ll need: patience. It’s not going to happen overnight, it’s not going to happen quickly, and odds are it’s going to be difficult; so if you’re not big on patience, get ready to have it tested, big-time.

You mentioned your weight and age, but not your height—that’s going to be a factor in determining how many calories you should have. If you are going to get a personal trainer, perhaps you should also talk with a nutritional expert and get a food plan set up?

Welcome to the forum.

We have great sections on exercise and nutrition and those would be a good place to start.

At the top of each section there are a number of sticky threads and it is a good idea to read those first.

The key to really sorting out your weight is to adopt a new healthy lifestyle that is going to last you for the rest of your life. Basically, you got to be bigger than you want by having some bad habits and the only way to sort it out long term is to replace those with good habits that you keep up forever...

Weight change is all associated with calories... You take in calories when you eat or drink anything and you burn calories when you do any form of activity. If you take in more calories than you burn - you gain weight. If you take in less than you burn - you lose weight.

Any form of exercise means that you burn more calories than you would have done otherwise so that helps you towards losing weight.

Joining a gym would be great, using a personal trainer would be great - but in all honesty - you can start burning more calories today by going out for a walk... That burns more calories too...

Now the other side of that equation is the food that you eat and drink.

Simple steps can have good results... initially you can get things going by starting to eat healthier in lots of different ways... these are the steps that you are going to want to adopt forever... they are really great habits...

  • drink plenty water - lots of us here aim to drink 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds that we weight.
  • fill up on fruit and vegetables
  • exchange things for low calorie alternatives - eg diet drinks, skimmed milk, granulated sweetener, sugar free sweets and gum, low fat or fat free dairy like yoghurts and spread
  • try to cook food in a healthy way using things like oil spray (I buy "fry light"), basically bake or grill things and not deep fry, try to opt for low calorie sauces as sauces can include a lot of calories
  • try to not eat too much starchy carbs - e.g. it can be easy to have too much bread etc
  • try to opt for lean protein - we all need to eat sufficient protein - but cut the fat off meat and do not eat skin on chicken
  • have some calcium every day as it is good for us - for instance I have fat free yoghurt every day.

I suggest that you read the following thread - it may help you settle in and make friends

Good luck with your project.
