Hi all,

I'm new to this forum. I guess today I was extra motivated to see what I can do to change my lifestyle. I am 24 y.o. male weighing in at about 208 lbs, 6'0" with a body fat at about 30%. I am a medical student currently studying for my boards (taking my USMLE Step 1 at the end of July/ beginning of August) and I was wondering if I could get some advice from anyone on how to get in shape while studying. I basically have to study long hours for this exam (approx. 10 hours/day).

I have tried to go to the gym in the mornings about 3x/week but I can barely get an hour's worth of a workout due to my busy schedule. My workout involves 15-20 minutes on the elliptical, 10-15 mins jump roping, 15-20 mins on weights, and 10 mins ab/pushups. I haven't been seeing much of a change in my weight. I have classic truncal fat, especially concentrated at my waist, thighs, chest and upper arms (worst! They look like huge loaves of bread!). Meanwhile I have a lean face, skinny forearms, and chicken legs. I have been overweight from as long as I can remember. Studying life as I'm sure many of you know is very sedentary and involves very little movement. On top of that, the most comforting but surely not the more healthy alternative for me to deal with stress is by eating. Is there anyone out there that has or had this dillema? I would really like to bring down my body fat and buildup my muscle mass. What kind of foods are best for me that wont impact my studying? What kind of goal should I set? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hey. For cardio, all you need is a good warmup and 4m of Tabata running: 20s sprint, 10s rest and repeat. Do that for 4m.

You can also put some of your stuff on cue cards or tape and review it while at the gym. Maximize your rest periods between sets and time doing cardio (if you aren't going to do the Tabata).
