substitute for chin ups?

does anyone know of a substitute exercise that hits the same muscles in the way chin ups do? Preferably using freeweights as I don't have access to machines, or a chin up bar.

like I said, I don't have access to any machines. I'm guessing you skipped my post and just tried to answer the question. :p

i already looked everywhere and I can't find anything to hang off. One possibility is using a tree branch in my garden, but I'm pretty sure there arn't any decent shaped ones.

door

the lat pull down isnt the same as a chin up

open ur door and do chin ups with ur fingers gripping the top of the door, ur belly dragging against the door will add resistance

buy a pipe and tie it to a tree branch so that it is hanging like a trapeze, the lack or stability will keep u honest and ur wont be able to "swing" ur way to a chin up

go to a playground (the older the playground the more likely u will find good stuff to work out on, modern playgrounds a for whimpy kids)

hang a rope across something horizontally and do chin ups on the rope!

good luck

Good idea with the trapeze thing...

How is the lat pull down not the same thing? Same motion. Most beginner workouts utilize lat pull downs instead of pull ups due to dificulty. Turn your hand grip around to the chin up position and it should be essentially the same thing.

If I'm wrong - chime in, maybe i'll learn something.

i wish i was a scientist

I wish i had the scientific reasoning for this, and I used to think the same thing, same motion, same thing.

But, If I were to plug 200 lbs (my body weight) into the lat pull down machine I can hit out over ten, wait a couple minutes, hit out ten, wait and hit out maybe 8.

If i grab the chin up bar (tactical grip) I can go about 8 before my form starts to crap out. wait a couple of minutes and hit out about 6

I think that it is because of the swinging moments that u can't get urself into with the tactical chin up, with a lat pull down ur sitting down and rip the bar down with ur legs and lower back as well as the upper back, with a tactical chin up, its pretty much all back. You have that leg thing holding ur legs down, maybe that is where the difference is.

I wish I could find the quote by Pavel in Beyond Body Buidling but he says the same, cable pull downs are not an alternative for chin ups, as frequently the case, he doesn't explain why but he is right.

After doing tactical chin ups my back relaxed looks more beaslty than my back did when it was flexed while I was doing the lat pull downs, and now I'm doing tacticals with additional weight, good strenght with good size.

I wish I could explain myself better, I'm sorry I've made a bold statement without a reason, but you gotta give the tactical a try, it is definety one of the best back exercises there is!

I agree with what your saying - the reasoning being that your body doesn't recruit as many stabilizer muscles to complete the movement - but if you can't do chin ups, I still think the lat pull down is your next best case as is the case with leg presses and squats. There will never be a perfect replacement, but we're talking about the best alternative.

interesting... anyways i've done pull ups off the end of my roof. works perfect. jump; grab; pull up!

true

yea for beginners its great, unless u can get ur hands on out of those new fangled chin up machine where u stand on the platform

chinning on ur roof is just plain badass

man i've lost sight of this post...sorry

if you want good ways to hit ur back, try the deadlift, one arm suitcase deadlift, kettlebell (dumbell) swings, snatches,

You can buy a chin up/pull up bar at many stores, even Target, that can be mounted in a doorway.
