I do yoga. (I also do ballet, pilates, treadmill, weights, Brazil Butt Lift, and different combination DVD's).
I'm no yoga exert. I bought a beginner yoga DVD several years ago, which has both active yoga routines, and those meant to de-stress. It is not labelled as any specific style of yoga, and I haven't had the desire to add more yoga DVD's to my library...because I'm happy with the one I have.
When I do one of the active yoga workouts, it's usually meant to augment a more strenuous workout earlier in the day. (I do my main workout first thing in the morning, but I often do a seond workout in the afternoon, too. My second workout really has to be one where I won't need to shower again.) In yoga, the breathing is great for burning calories, and the stretching keeps my muscles toned and flexible. But, while I'm trying to lose weight, I don't feel as though I'd burn enough calories doing even the most strenuous yoga routine on that beginner DVD.
More often, I'm doing the nighttime yoga routines, to help me relax and sleep. (I've had insomnia my whole life.) The one I like the most is called 'Good Night's Sleep' and is 30 min's. I start that (obviously) about a half hour before I plan to go to bed. But there are several to choose from.
My feeling about exercise is...aside from the fact that I really dislike doing it just for superficial reasons like appearance, as opposed to health...it should not be punishing. Granted, I'm nearing 50-years-old, and no longer feel the need to prove anything to anyone. But I'm still judged harshly on my appearance, so I'm trying to get in better shape, in an attempt to minimize the negative, superficial judgement I receive from others. I'm already fit enough. I feel like yoga is a kinder, gentler way to stay flexible and toned. I can imagine always keeping yoga as an option.
I really like my one yoga DVD, and use it daily. I find pilates, ballet, and the various combination workout DVD's to be much more strenuous than my yoga DVD, though. But it is just a generic, beginner DVD.
I hope that info. helps somehow.
