stomache sticks out

When I first started doing my ab workout I saw some defininition and lines beginning to form, but now my stomache is starting to push out like I have a gut. What would be the cause of this? Are the muscles just getting bigger and pushing the little bit of fat in front of them?
 
This has really only started since I have been back to school. I cant eat as many times as i was so could this be a possibility?
