Stickies

If you could have more stickies around this forum, what would they be? Or what would you suggest in addition to what's already here?

I'm not sure that we need "more stickies"

I like the layout to some degree of Words of Wisdom -where a specific question is asked and the answer is given... or rather linked... basically acting as a FAQ.

There's a lot of good info contained in teh stickies but it's also a lot of reading -maybe cut them down to less chatter and fussiness in the threads and have it be 'just the facts'

While lots of info is good - this is the web and it's the home of short attention span theater... I'd like a bullet point first - then break it down into more info...

I'm asking more for my forum. I'm sitting over here typing up a storm realizing only a handful of people will actually read this stuff. Maybe I should end most of them with a bullet point synopsis of what the post discussed?

I kinda figured since you were posting up a storm over there :)

The synopsis i think is a good idea -it makes the explosion of words a lot easier to digest -and then you can go back and re-read the initial posts.. I have the attention span of a fruit fly... and unless I really know what the subject matter is about - I have trouble following it -I really need te point made clear at the outset.. then I can usually follow...

I' m not sure if y ou've already got it there.. but one thing that would be good -is kind of why numbers aren't always the be all and end all..

ie - 3500 calories in a lb -if i exercise my butt off and burn off 3500 calories why haven't i lost a pound... if my caloric deficit fo rthe week is 7000 calories - maintence vs actual - why haven't l lost 2lbs...

really why numbers should be a guideline and not gospel

that is touched on a bit in the scale mentality thread and i think elsewhere, but nothing specifically about it i don't think. i will add that to the list though since it's invariably something that comes up daily.

it might be far more detail than you want to include and it may be seen as endorsing something you don't want to endorse....

but what about the pros/cons of various "plans" that are available.
ie Low carbination, weight watchers (or rather calorie/point counting if you're not naming names), food combining, the low glycemic diet -

Kind of which "plan" might be appropriate for what person

That's a good thought too. Although I'm not a fan of ppl forking their money over if they don't have to.

that's kind of why i would say generic plans.. .you really dont need to fork over your money for any plan... and there was an article in the paper today that the "me" diet is the most popular these days -but there are people who come in spouting that low carb/low gi/low whatever is the way to go and it's the only thing that works

I like the stickies, but it can be tough getting the information that you are looking for. It might be an idea to have the mods be the only ones able to post in the stickies. If someone has a question to something specific, he/she can either start a new thread where this question is addressed or PM the mod. If the mod thinks that this would be a good addition to the sticky, the mod can add it.

This limits the amount of replies and back and forth that new member have to wade through to get started.

I've considered this too... locking the stickies. It's hard to tell where a conversation will go though. I recently read through some of the stickies here and it's crazy how some of the conversations after the stuck post evolved into threads that would have been stuck on their own merit. But there is a lot of BS too. I see pros and cons to both and this is something I haven't yet ruled out.

Another thought for a sticky because it seems to get asked a lot... in various ways

What is Metabolism... and how does it get "speeded up" or slowed down... and what can a person do to kick start their metabolism

and I realize it's a generic question that based on where the person is in their diet life cycle the answer might be slightly different...

but basically -questions I've seen - do cheat meals help a metabolism... s

basically things a person could do to help improve their metabolism and is it possible for a person (short of an underlying medical condition) to have a metabolsim so slow that it's impossible for them to lose weight.

Stickies I'm sure will evolve over time based on questions that you're forumers are asking

the information that you currently have as stickies could be libraries either on your site or part of the forum in a seperate section (that makes full text searching more efficient)

You don't want to have everything stuck - as you do want people asking general type questions as well -

This is true. It's just that I feel like a foundation of general information is important. I don't think it's possible to have all questions answered by the stickies. But I think a very good baseline foundation of information will make the forum an excellent resource and eliminate/reduce the ridiculous questions.

An FAQ sticky for every sub-forum

Scales, and why they suck

Spot reducing

Muscle retention/maintenance

Adding mass

Macros

The basic lifts one here is gold

Beginner lifting

Gym intro (etiquette, basic movements and equipment) Sort of an FAQ for that person who just joined the gym and has no clue

Steady state vs. HITT

Body weight exorcises

Whey protein (why, when, what)

Walking/running/jogging

Suggested reading stickies are always good

A work out of the week sticky/archive sticky

That should get you started lol

I agree.. but you'll always have those people that think stickies don't apply to them and they believe that they are indeed special and their me me me specific questions should be answered regardless if the info is in the stickies already :D

Scales, and why they suck

Check

Spot reducing

Check

Muscle retention/maintenance

Check

Adding mass

Don't have.

Check. Well it's typed but not put on the forum yet.

The basic lifts one here is gold

I should bring that over.

Beginner lifting

Check. Well started working on it yesterday.

Gym intro (etiquette, basic movements and equipment) Sort of an FAQ for that person who just joined the gym and has no clue

Hmm, I like that idea.

Steady state vs. HITT

Good idea. I might just use Lyle's blog series on the subject... was the most well rounded, informative info I've seen on the subject to date.

Body weight exorcises

We'll have an entire video database with calisthenics.

Whey protein (why, when, what)

We have a supplement sub forum. I don't know if stickies will be up in it before it's opened or not, but I agree.

Walking/running/jogging

Slated.

A work out of the week sticky/archive sticky

Similar to Ross. That could be neat.

That should get you started lol

Thanks!

While you're site is going to be for 18 and older - as you know from this site how many young teenagers stumble in...perhaps a common sense sticky that the 13 (minimum age for registering with vbulletin) to 18 year olds that they could take w ith them..

ya know -talk to your parents about your goals and about not buying sodas and chips -or at least supplementing with fruit and vegetables.
being active etc...
