staying in the 'fat burning zone' during cardio

HELLO EVERYONE!!!!! :cool2:

so here i am again trying to get rid of the last stubborn few pounds of fat before it's bikini time..

i have always loved a killer cardio sesh lasting 30-40 mins in which i train moderate to high intensity and i sweat buckets .. the buzz i get after is amazing

i notice that being in a fat burning zone requires lower intensity and to have a slower heart rate while training.. i have tried this a few times but it just feels like i am not getting much out of it and i hardly break a sweat compared to the usual cardio sessions i do... i kinda feel 'surely plodding along like this is not going to burn off more fat then how i usualy train'

can this lower intensity cardio workout (for a longer period of time.. usualy 1 hour) really burn more fat then a higher intensity 30-40 min workout???

ps- and please don't suggest hiit .. i always throw up or nearly pass out when i do that and i want to keep some element of 'kool' at the new gym i have been going to haha

do the higher intensity cardio, the fat burning zone will make you burn more fat as a percentage of the total calories you burn, but the total calories you burn will be really low. If you go for a higher intensity you won't burn as much fat as a total percent of what you burn, but it will probably be higher or at least the same because you burn more calories with the higher intensity (same duration persumed)

Besides, the thing that burning fat is the only thing that will help you lose fat is false. Burning carbs will also help you lose fat, since those carbs can be stored as fat. Or if you burn a lot of glycogen (carbs stored in the body) it means that more of the carbs you eat later will be stored as glycogen (in order to replenish the stores since you depleted them with training) instead of being stored as fat.

This might be a complicated way of looking at it. The most important thing if you want to lose weight is that you burn more calories than you take in. Higher intensity cardio for the same duration as low intensity cardio will of course burn more calories.

It's a myth. If your goal is body fat reduction.. you should focus on burning calories, not burning fat. And one way of doing that is to expend more calories than consumed. Running at a steady pace for an hour will increase your endurance not really burn calories like a high intensity run will. Hope this helps.

kool thanks.. glad we have that cleared up now.

i do notice alot of people at the gym doing the slower 'thing' so wondered if i had been missing something all of these years and there is something out there better for results then the cardio i have been doing for years.

right well i wont bother doing that one again... glad i only wasted 2 cardio sessions trying it out. back to the grindstone tomorrow

while i basically agree with the above, I will add that if you had to do fasted cardio...like first thing in the morning and no breakfast, a lower intensity, longer cardio session is better. Less muscle wasting occurs. So you'd burn fewer total calories, but at least you'd spare more muscle tissue.

for other times of day the higher intensity, shorter sessions are gonna give you the most bang for your buck.

Always go for the higher intensity. Your total calories burned will be higher, and that's what you want when losing weight.
