Stationary Bike Discouragement

Hey again!

So, I have been doing 40 minutes a day for 5 days a week on a stationary bike at my gym. I do different intensity levels and at the end I feel totally worked out, like I think I should. (ie: sweaty, high pulse, all those good things). (I also lift dumbells at home 5 days a week) But I was just reading somewhere that stationary bike exercise is just as good as walking, so you might as well walk. I was totally discouraged by this because I thought I was doing way better than just walking. I have been judging my workout level by my pulse rate during biking which averages 162 (I'm 20 years old, so I figured that was good). Should I just ignore this negative additude towards stationary cycling, or is there something I should know??? Will my workout program help me lose weight?? Thanks.....!

Stationary Bike cardio is just fine and i dont know what you read but walking vs. spinning your ass off for 40 mins, come on now, common sense.

However...

Anything you do over and over again your body will adapt to. I use the bike in my cardio routine but i spice it up a bit with HITT and various throw ins like
Hop on and jump rope fast as i can 1 min, jumping jacks 1 min, mountain climbers 1 min, hop back on 5 mins medium pace and so on. So try to either do other different cardio workout to keep from getting stale, or spice up your bike routine.

Also something i noticed in your post. The lifting dumbells 5 days a week thing just doesn't sit right. One doing a full body strength train 3 days a week is all you really need when starting out on a weight loss plan. Your body needs a good day between to rest. You are just going to rip into your muscle otherwise. So i would spice up your cardio routine and add a full body workout to training.

Good luck, and really your common sense told you that was a silly article, whatever it was.

Yeah, you're totally right about the commen sense part. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in what I am doing, it's hard to step back and think clearly. I will try to mix things up too and change up my weight lifting. Maybe I will work lower body on the days I don't do upper. Thanks for the advice!

Activity is what is important. Your heart rate is around about where you will be feeling some exertion.........but nothing big. If you train at these levels for several weeks, you will be developing a cardio base....which will help to make your body efficient. You should also pepper your training with some interval work. But remember.............stay active.............and don't forget your nutrition.

They are not the same if you are actually doing a good workout on the bike.
I walk about 10k around trip to work everyday and do generally try and do spinning at least twice a week. And the spinning will does a lot more for me then the walking does. But as stated before if cycling is all you are doing i advise to add some other forms of cardio into your routine and shock your body as this will give you a new kick start
