Static Exercises

Ok here's the deal. I did a lot of searching about static exercises on this site and on many other forums (And by the way i noticed this one is definitely the nicest and most helpful). So who does them, and do they work? I want to gain mass and strength, but mostly mass. This is also assuming my diet is taken care of and rest is adequate. I did them today and they seemed to workout my body quite well. We'll see if i'm sore tomorrow like i usually am. But has anybody had good results with these???

What exactly are statics? I understand them to be just holding a weight still as long as you can - like one of my bicep exercises is curling with 2 dumbells, one arm repping and the other holding the weight still at the mid-point. Is this statics?

i reccomend working static exercises into most every mass routine. they offer great visual benefits (wethr or not they offer strength is debatable, search GTO Golgi Tendon Organ). a static, or isometric exercise, is where you hold the weight in a fixed position where your target muscles are fully contracted, and release at failure...

Are you talking about "Static Contractions?"

If you are, I know that it takes a MASSIVE machine with tons of weight (like 3000 lbs for squats). Most gyms don't have equipment that is designed for static contractions... Check with a gym about equipment needs before joining.

BTW - I have heard lots of mixed reviews both good and bad on these. I am of the opinion that there is no such thing as an easy way to make massive gains (which goes against everything static contractions says they can do for you).

Let us know if you try it.

Yeah Static Contractions are what i'm talking about. I did em yesterday, it isn't hard to find enough wait for a skinny guy like me, but i think once you get pretty big and strong it'll be hard to find enough wait to do em. But yeah i just did em yesterday and i'll keep doin em for a few weeks and let you guys know if i see any changes.

where have you heard this? doing anything at all with 3000# sounds like a recipe for disaster.

How does a 5000 lb leg press sound to you? How about a 2000 lb bench press? Does a 1000+ lb deadlift sound scary??

I have never tried it, but I know some who have... And, they all think it rocks! You workout considerably less frequency than regular weight training (~1 workout per week for only a couple of minutes each workout).

Pete Sisco (the inventor of this workout technology) has written several books about this.

Check it all out here:

For simplicities sake, you can do static holds with 105-125% of your 1RM using the power rack or a partner (or two) rather than using 1000s of pounds and it will be just as nearly as effective.

The main idea (as Mreik stated) is to decrease the inhibition reflex of the GTO and it really doesn't take that much...a little at a time. The static holds shouldn't be the main part of your workout, just a tool, not the tool.

Very interesting. Pete Sisco's theories seem pretty straightforward, I'll have to look into them quite a bit when I really begin to focus on muscle growth.
