Stabbing/Throbbing pain upper back left side of head

I'm 32 and I've been working out for over a year on mostly my glam muscles (chest, arms, some back). My routine mostly follows this: I work out every other day where day 1 I do heavy lifting with fewer routines and day 3 I do burn-outs with more routines. Usually I take a two-day break at the end of the week.

Recently, I've had to stop completely because when benching (burn-out day) last week a searing pain followed by a tingling sensation went from behind my left ear all across the back, upper part of my skull.

I'm now left with intermittent pain that is sharp and throbs on the upper left side of my head. It seems to get worse throughout the day and whenever I first stand up. Sometimes the pain feels like it's actually inside my left ear in addition to the other pain.

I haven't ramped up weight or incorporated new exercises.

Has anyone else experienced this or know how to best nurse the injury? I would go to the doctor but my insurance doesn't kick in until July 1st.

Umm, stop working out until July 1st then. Exercise-induced intracranial pain such as that is rather worrying, in my opinion, and tells me something quite serious could be going on, such as a thrombosis or aneurysm. (On the other hand, it could be something much more minor, but with something like this, I would take no chance.)

I recommend seeing your primary care physician for proper assessment. There are many causes of neck/shoulder pain and stiffness including arthritis, strained muscle, rotator cuff teat, etc.

The initial treatment for most of these problems are rest for a few days, regular anti-inflammatory medications (if you have no medical disorders prohibiting them, such as ulcers, kidney failure, allergy, but not limited to these) and then physical therapy. People who do not respond to these treatments should see a pain doctor, orthopedics or spine surgeon.

Ice packs, rest and massage can be very helpful. You might need physical therapy but first an evaluation with a doctor to make sure you have no neurological findings.

And yes. It’s time to stop until July.
