Squats

What is the proper position for doing squats? I've been trying to do them the correct way, but I don't think I'm doing it right. I don't want to end up hurting myself, so any information would be great.

bar across your traps elbows back, looking forward, feet shoulder width apart, toes pointing forward or slightly outward, bend at the knees, back slightly bend forward, keep the back straight (movement is from the hips) to avoid injury (don't round it).

Thanks, I think I might just have the wrong barbell for what I was trying to do. I have a curved bar, I thought it might make it easier than a straight one. Guess I was wrong, because whenever I try to put the bar behind my neck like that, it gets painfull after three or four reps. I might try to put a towel or something behind my neck to soften the sting of it. Thanks for the input.

make sure you don't have the bar too high (up on the neck) or too low.

You can take a hand towel and wrap it around the bar to help pad it, but eventually you will toughen up in that area and it won't bother you as much.
