Squats (Hurting Knees)

I've been doing squats for the past week as recommended by someone in order to help tone my buns and thighs...The thing is everytime I'm squatting, my right knee feels like it's about to pop. Now I really can't afford to tear anything in my knee. Is there any other exercise that can help me tone my buns and thighs that won't put so much pressure on my knees?

You could try lunges, although they will probably put the pressure on your knees. Stretching may help. If you are having knee pain I would highly recommend leg extensions and leg curls to strengthen the muscles that stabalize the knee joint.

Make sure you are doing the squats with proper form. This is something that a lot of people get wrong - and can make a huge difference in how effective and safe squats are. Your knees should never go past your toes. Have someone watch you and make sure that you have good form.

another way of making sure your knees are not bending over your toes is using a stability ball between your back and ball. that way when you squat you will have to lean back to make sure your knees are not going over the toes. also if you have pain trying any other exercises stated above, make sure you are doing the proper form. You do not want to make things worse! Knee surgery is terrible!

one thing you could do is off set your stance normally your toes would be even when you squat. next time try bringing your right foot a couple of inches forward. it will take some of the stress off your knee. you could also try a wider stance, with your toes pointing out. check out this link, its targeted to guys that want to lift big weights but the basic ideas work the same.

Definitely agree with Kalrog, form is the most important!!! If you choose to offset your stance, as suggested by silvorus, make sure you are doing this only temporarily till you find out what the problem is that is making your knee hurt...I don't mean to assume that you are not doing proper squats, in fact, you might be doing perfect squats, but you might have an issue that is directly related to foot/ankle/knee/hip biomechanics. Have you ever had an injury that could be causing all this? Need more info...;)

squats are one of the best exercises to stabilise the knee so they should help artyehr than hinder.

Make sure you are not using too much weight, not sqautting too fast, not letting your knees bow out to the sides-kepp them in line with your feet/shins but dont let them go further out than your toes. keep a Straight back.

I recommend you see a doctor to find out whats wrong, and a physical trainer to learn how to properly strenghten the knees.

Or you can try to lay flat on the floor and ride a bicycle! I heard this tip on the Jack Lalanne show and it seems to be working for me!

I have no balance so I have a problem doing lunges. I bought the "I Want Those ABS! & BUNS!" with Tamilee and she teaches you how to do what I would call a backward lunge. I feel it more in my butt then with a regular lunge. You put one leg behind you and put your weight on it. The opposite foot is in front with the toes pointed and on the floor. This is to help you with your balance. You then lower your weight onto the foot behind you and then raise your body. I do 3 sets of 15 reps and I really feel it. The 1st time I did these I was sore in the butt and thighs the next day.

hi kay, i like that reversed lunge exercise. i'm a little confused about how to do it exactly. could you go step by step for exercise dummy's like myself. thanx. if you know any more booty exercises that would be great too. i want to get a big round booty and it seems like all these exercises make my butt smaller, it's discouraging. please help
