squats help

hi everyone..ive started squating 2 weeks ago and i dont know why, instead of feeling the workout on my glutes i end up having lower back pain  . Its like doing nothing except for hurting my back. I was thinking of changing to lunges or something else but i've heard squats are the best for the butt..
What do u think?

how did you start with them? i tell ppl to use an empty bar or even sometimes just something like a broomstick just to learn proper form and to make sure you feel it where you're supposed to feel it.

but getting someone in there with you to help you is great advice. :)

any decent gym will have staff members who'll help you, for free, on form for an exercise...especially one like squats.

I definitely suggest going with an empty bar for a whole session. Really get a feel for the form, and make sure you have an arch in your back, sticking your hips/butt out behind you, and tilt your head back a bit so you can kind of look up. Also make sure you've got the bar loaded on your traps.

This is a list of exercises with textual, and animated, instructions. The one for squats isn't great due to the camera angle, but it may be useful.

thanks..

everyone. I think the problem was that i excedeed myself starting with too much weight from the beginning thinking that i could handle it.I mean i thought that with more weight i could cut repetitions coz i really get very exhausted when squating. But thats right, i should go in stages..
