I was just reading a post from Nutriangel about sprouting beans and lentils. I've wanted to try this for some time now, but never knew exactly how. Can anyone be of some help w/ this? TIA:)

It's been a long time since I've sprouted anything, but that post made me think about trying it again.

I would recommend buying whatever it is you're going to sprout from a farmer's market or organic grocery store. I'm not keen on sprouting regular packaged beans or lentils or whatever ... although I know you can do it.

Take a couple of tablespoons of whatever you're going to sprout and put them in a jar (like a Ball canning jar). Cover them with water and let them sit for 12-24 hours (give or take, you don't have to be exact, but no more than a day or they'll rot).

Drain the water and rinse well. Cover the jar lightly but don't seal it. I usually take some cheesecloth and rubber band it over the top of the jar. You want air circulation - but no opening for stuff (or creatures) to get into.

Rinse the contents of the jar twice a day and make sure they're well drained (but not dry) before you put the cloth or whatever back over the top. You want 'em in partial sunlight, but not full sun, or they'll dry out too fast.

They should start sprouting about the 4th or 5th day and you can harvest whenever after that ... depending on how "leafy" you want your sprouts.

You can also sprout alfalfa and other smaller things by soaking and rinsing and then laying them out on a bed of damp papertowel. Just keep the papertowel moist (not wet) and out of direct sunlight.

I think I might stop by Whole Foods tonight and see what I can find in the bulk bins ... I'm craving sprouts now! :)

Thanks for posting this, Kara. I'm excited to try this as well with some sunflower seeds. (I think I read it can be done with those)
