Sprained Ankles - Need Advice

Hi Everyone - I need your opinions, knowledge, experience, etc... I was walking with a friend & turned to talk to her & I accidentally stepped on half cement, half dirt. My foot twisted to the right, I had my hands full, and I fell to the left, which my left foot then twisted to the left. I got up as soon as I fell - I was soooo embarrassed! My left foot didn't hurt, my right foot hurt a little. I rotated my foot for a little bit, walked it out & it stopped hurting. I had my Zumba Class that evening. I wasn't hurting so I taught my class. Big Mistake! This happened on Wed Feb 13th. I woke up on Thur with my right ankle hurting. This has never happened to me before so I went & got a splint & went upon my day. Not much walking just in & out of the car. When I woke up on Fri & was hurting more so I went to the doctor. Had x-rays done he said nothing broken just sprained. So, I rested & iced & took Ibuprofen & had them wrapped Fri Sat & Sun. Since Mon I've had them wrapped, iced in the evening, took Ibuprofen but went to work. On & off walking but sitting most of the time. Had someone else take over my class last week. So, its been 11 days since I fell. Should it still be hurting? It doesn't hurt like before & it’s more sore than hurting. The round bony part of the ankles & the back leg bone of the right leg is what feels sore & it's uncomfortable to stand for a long time or walk for a long time. So should I be doing something different? Should I go to the doc again? Or is this normal because of what I did/done? I have a class this Tue & Wed!

Doctors usually give vague and wrong musculoskelteal injury prognosis's. Although it must be a sprain usually they tell you the severity but i guess only an MRI can do that. I wouldnt go back to the doc but go see a physio/physical therapist if you need to.

does that ankle still hurt and when did it go away?
10 days ago, I also suffered and pretty bad spill and my ankle was bruised up and purple. Now, I am back to working out again but the ankle is still tender and sore in the morning. When did this feeling go away for you?

Yes, it stills hurts. I took a 2 week break from teaching but after that I continued teaching twice a week but had to modify my movements. I teach Zumba - a dance class. I have not been able to do any jumping yet.

My other problem is that I fell a second time and re-injured them. If I walk or stand for more than a couple of hours, I start to hurt.

I went for my follow up and the doc said that everything seems stable so he is sending me for some sthrenghting therapy and a follow up appt in 6 weeks. I've been told that it takes a long time to heal. When the tempature changes, I feel it now in my ankles.

This is an awesome website someone shared with me on sprains. Look it up:

That ankle sprain website is nice; it reminded me of the treatment that my specialist told me when I injuried my other ankle several years back and had to get an MRI.

While doing the ABC excercise, my ankle would crack a lot more than it usually does. Is that bad? There is still some swelling and I still do the RICE thing.

Btw, i remember doing all those excercises now in the past and it helps out a lot in the recovery period, thx for the post.

Your Ankle

Hi,

How's your ankle doing now?

I'll be taking my Zumba training in two weeks - where did you do yours and how long have you been teaching Zumba? Do you teach anything else?

Have a *sunny* day,

~ Heather ~

after 2 months, my ankle is still tender. With the weather changing from hot to cool; it would act up and hurt so I still ice it when i watch TV in the evening. I can do most workout except sprinting and hard swimming freestyle. Even some yoga poses hurt but the ankle does feel a lot better after yoga.

I injured my ankle about a month ago in the same exact way. It took a week to be able to run on it. I still can't rotate it side to side well and it also hurts when I do freestyle swimming. I also still cannot kick with zoomers on (not that I should). I think it just takes a long time for things like that to heal. Feet are really demanded upon-its a wonder they don't get hurt like that more often! Warming them up before workouts and icing after is all thats working for me. Zumba is at our gym now..looks like a fun class!

Hey there, sorry it took me this long to respond. How was your Zumba Training? I got certified on Feb 07 and have been teaching since Aug 07. No, just that but I love it!

Ankle sprains benefit from R.I.C.E. which is the acronym for REST. ICE. COMPRESSION. and ELEVATION. A great solution is

It is good for it but not after 2 weeks. For me when i have donk ankle injuries i always found that it just helped it to walk some every day on it. I mean after sitting with it elevated for 3 days you need to get some movement in it. Kinda of like the idea behind... if your sore after a workout the best way to get the soreness to go away is to work out.
