Spockafina...

Could you please lay out the guidelines for pre/post cardio/lifting macronutrients?
I am having a hard time grasping what needs to be eaten when. Thanks.

pre work-out - you don't need anything too specific - just a regular meal. Most people think you need carbs pre wo, but you don't - the carbs you've eaten since your last work-out (yesterday's pwo and p-pwo, today's breakfast) will be enough fuel.

post-work-out - carbs and protein. Specifically, usually 20-30 grams protein and 40-50 grams carbs. Good carbs pwo are white rice, white potatoes, cream of wheat or rice cereal, pasta

post-pwo - same as pwo, but your carbs should be more filling - brown rice instead of white, sweet potatoes instead of white, oatmeal, beans/legumes, WW pasta, etc.

If you're doing HIIT, treat it like a lifting work-out and follow the above. If it's steady-state cardio, you don't need to be too specific for pwo or p-pwo

First of all thank you so much, thats great info...

I am guessing an exception to this is the morning workout because you (among others) have said no workout on an empty stomach. So what am looking for here? A piece of fruit maybe?

A normal breakfast is best - I don't think a piece of fruit is substantial. If you can, wake up early enough that you have enough time between eating and lifting. If you don't have a lot of time, a protein shake and some oatmeal made in the microwave or a MRshake would be fastest

Thanks, I may be switching to an evening workout soon so that would solve that problem. I could probably adjust, I get up at 5am and workout around 6:15, that's why I have been eating a portion of my breakfast when I wake, and then the rest of it PWO. However I have noticed a declined energy about halfway through my workout. Sounds like the way I was eating may be the culprit.
