Splits?

Ok, dumb question here.. but I am confused.

When referring to a 2 day split, does that mean the workout is 2 days a week or 4 days a week?.. I think i read that a 2 day split is like mon, tues, and thurs, fri? So really thats is 4 days:confused:

So then what is a 3 day split? mon, wed, and fri?

and a 4 day split?

I dont even know if I am making sense, but I've just gotten confused.

Thanks in advance.

3 day=full body workouts performed 3x per week
2 day split=upper/lower OR push/pull break up of exercise/movement (4 days/week)

There are other methods (a 3 day might mean something like chest/tris, shoulders/back/bi's, legs or other such nonsense) but those are less effective and not as favorable.

i don't know if i'd call any full body program a split. split usually means you're splitting your body parts up into different days of the week.

so a 2-day split means every two resistance workouts, you've worked the entire body. a 3-day split would usually be a push/pull/leg split...chest/triceps one day, back and biceps another day, and legs on the third day.

not that anyone would scold you for calling 3 full body workouts per week a '3-day split"...I've just never come across anyone using that term.

True, but there are three days splits. I actually did one for a while. It went like so:

A: Squats, Bench Press, Calf Raise, Bent over row
B: Deadlifts, Shoulder Press, Russian Twists, Pull-ups

Week 1:

Day 1: A@4x6
Day 3: B@8x3
Day 5: A@3x10

Week 2:

Day 1: B@4x6
Day 3: A@8x3
Day 5: B@3x10

It went ok, but I grew fond of working a muscle group 2x/wk, every week, so I eventually went to 4x/wk, 2-day push/pull split.

Good points from everyone and here's another explanation.

A full body workout is not a split, because you ar enot splitting up your body parts.
Doing upper body one day and lower body another day is a 2 day split.
A 3 day split can be legs one day, chest, shoulders and triceps one day, and back and biceps another day, or some other variation of this.
A 4 day split might be legs one day, back one day, arms and shoulders one day and back and chest one day, or some other variation.
5 days splits are also possible. In my opinion full body or 2 day splits are often most successful, though other splits can certainly work well for certain people at certain times.
