On July 3rd, my husband, father-in-law and my 7 year-old son went golfing. Since it was just my hubby and his dad golfing, they got paired up with two other guys. So while on one of the holes, this other guy goes to hit the ball, but instead of keeping it in the fairway, the ball sliced to the left and hit my son smack dab in the back of the head. My son, Kody, was sitting in the golf cart as he's always been told to do for that exact reason. But bad luck....he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. My hubby took him to the ER, and they in turn ended up sending Kody to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis as a precaution. The original CT scan in Buffalo showed that he had a mild concussion with a displaced skull fracture and that there was blood around the fracture. Kody was kept overnight last night at Children's for monitoring. It was a serious blow to the head, and they say that the first 8-12 hours are the most crucial in a brain injury. He had another CT scan this morning, and there was no more bleeding, just some swelling around the area, which according to the doctor's, is normal for this kind of thing.
For the next month, he'll basically be a couch potato. He can't run, jump, climb, ride bike, no sports.....nothing. We were told that even the slightest bump to the head, could cause the fracture to blossom and not heal properly. So trying to keep a normal 7-year-old active kid contained....yeah, we'll have our hands full with that one! So if anyone has any good movie suggestions, send 'em my way!!! Once school starts in September, he won't be allowed to go out for recess or participate in gym for at least the first month.
It's been about 1 1/2 weeks since his accident, and he continues to improve. Although last night, my stress level sky-rocketed when my 4 1/2 year-old daughter decided to kick Kody in the head while they were playing in their "fort." My heart sank when I heard that screech. You know the kind.....where you just KNOW something's wrong. I ended up calling the doctor and he said to just keep an eye on him.
Kody goes back in for a repeat CT scan on the 24th. We hope to hear that the fracture is healing. Not being able to do anything is hard for Kody, cuz he's just an active kid.
So, I apologize for not being around much. My life has SO much stress these days. Good thing I'm addicted to working out. It's been a great stress reliever!
