Sore Muscles: when is it a good thing a bad thing

I am used to getting sore muscles after a workout day in the designated area that I worked out, especially since I am getting back to the gym after one-month absence.

The day before yesterday (Friday night), I tried some different abs techniques that I had never done before, and to his moment I am feeling sore in my abdominals which has never happened before, that burning sensation usually wears off. I don't mind the feeling of course, I know that it just means my muscles are recovering.

The situation just leads me to ask, with any muscle group, do sore muscles the days after always reflect progress? is it always a good thing? When is it a bad thing? Should working out sore muscles always be avoided? Any and all advise concerning sore muscles will be appreciated.

Thanks

if you get so sore to the point where the muscle cant function, thats bad, and means you waaayyy overworked that muscle. A little sore is normal, especially if you havent been to the gym in a while. And yes, it pretty much can reflect progress, as long as you eat a lot so those muscles can build up to be stronger!!!!

personally, if I feel a little sore the next day, i get a sense of accomplishment, knowing I gave that muscle a good workout.

and generally, if the muscle is very sore, dont lift with it.. If its a tiny bit sore, i think you could still lift with it.

Soreness isn't indicative of a good workout (and vice-versa: not being sore doesn't mean that you had a bad workout). You get sore from an intense massage, too: does that mean that the muscles grew?

It just means that you did something new and that there's a localized inflammation in the muscle/s
