some thoughts

hi there, I have some thoughts about weight lifting and body buidling in general:

I've been browsing the web and this site in particular and I came to the conclusion that people who work out regularly also have a strict discipline in terms of their life style and especially their eating habits.
I even read one guy in here (sorry no offence, I forgot who it was) who was waking up at 3 am to eat some boiled eggs or one cup of protein shake.
The thing is that I see many people out there, who don't have a strict discipline but have very nice bodies... and they don't put too much effort on it seriously...
I guess it depends on ur goal but here is some points I wanted to say:

1) too much discipline kills the fun, the joy of any activity I think. I do some sport to stay healthy as well and not only to look like a model.

2) this point is really important to me:
I believe that if u go on a strict discipline like that, your body get used to it and any change with that will result in a big change in ur body who woudln't be prepared to it.
People use creatine and everybody knows that once u stop taking it, u lose most of ur strenght and stuff.... so I really don't see the point...

The same thing happend for people who go on strict diet: they lose a lot true but once they eat "normally" (not excessively) they gain weight cuz their body was used to only low calory food (that's the yoyo effect I think)
same goes for the bodybuilder...
I mean there will have some time where each of us won't be able to work out or do an intense physicall activity. The result is that u will gain weight and lose a lot of the muscles u put so much effort to gain. And that sux!!!
And u can't (unless ur not human) apply a strict eating habits all ur life..... So as soon as u will get away a little from it, the results will be really bad just because u didn't trained ur body to it.

So in conclusion I would say it's good to be carefull and caution about that but not too much. It's ok if the result don't come as fast as u want cuz the slower u will gain muscles and get in shape, the slower u will lose it when u stop (or just slow down) with ur work out.

So what do u think ?

The strict discipline isnt for me either. There are people who have six-packs and have never worked out at the gym...thats due to genetics. However, I feel 50/50 that it IS important what you eat, but a calorie is still a calorie. Realize that your body breaks down all carbohydrates into glucose, sugar, which is then used in the cell with oxygen to produce CO2 and water and turns ADP into ATP, the fuel of the body. The human digestive process is much more complicated than that, but simply speaking, a calorie from sugar is the same as a calorie from a complex carb. I know that whenever I devour a sweet that my body is gonna destroy it to replenish my muscles because I workout hard and exercise a lot. Just my 2 cents.

Ya know, I've been thinking a lot of the same thoughts lately. Following a really really strict diet can really damage your quality of life. I mean some of the best times of my life have been hanging out with my friends, drinking and eating. And I'm not talking about water and veggies. I'm talking beer and pizza, burgers, and various other junk. Sometimes being on a strict diet can be a big pain in the ass. I personally get bored with the foods that I eat. Everything just seems so bland. Thats why I give myself one day a week to eat anything that I want. Don't get me wrong. I don't friggin pig out or anything, but on Saturdays if I want to order a pizza, or go to burger king, or go to perkins and eat a melt sandwich after I've been drinking, I go do it. You have to allow yourself some kind of cheating. Weather it's an entire day, or just one meal a week. If you don't sometimes eat the food you've been craving or miss, your just setting yourself up for failure. It's ok to cheat. Just pick a time for it. Don't just do it on the spur of the moment. Because then you'll do it all the time. Pick a day, pick a meal on a certain day. Trust me on this one. If you love greasy junk food, this method will help you deal with your cravings, while not sending yourself into an uncontrolable binge that could last for a week. Eat some pizza, eat that dripping sandwich, or anything else that you like. Enjoy it. It tastes better when you don't allow it to yourself all the time.

you know my idea of work out was that I would go to the gym regularly and get built in shape and stuff
and then not necessarly be as regular as before and just practise outdor sport like basket ball....
My idea was that once I reach my goal then I would slow down without affecting my general shape that much... of course doing some cardio here and there and some other sports!!
But looks like u lose almost everything when u slow down!!

AND THAT SUX!!

have to point out that if someone experiened this, they are not training correctly.

i would agree there's no need to be 100% strict. training needs to be fun and enjoyable, same as your diet.

if you come to dread it, the less likely one will stick with it

myself, i've been lifting since 1992. i love it, the whole deal. lifting, counting calories, charting my progress. i enjoy it. :)

I dunno I never took any, but I am saying that according to what I read in this site and else where...

Ya Abear's right you dont lose much after stopping creatine.
I figure the hardest thing to do is cut your carbs to the point that your eating 2 toast a day. Anything having to do with calorie restriction is what kills me! Its all about balance, like everything else in life so enjoy life! Its all about feeling good about yourself.

2 toast a day ? now way man, can't do that :D

the things is

yea but the thing is...the people that dont do anything and look great dont stay like that forever. Im 18 now and i've been working out all thru highschool for sports, at one point i worked out a lot and was stronger and bigger than my peers, but not by much, now that we're older my healthy habits have kept me fast, strong and flexible while all my peers who were "natuarlly" in shape are getting slower and fatter. They arent slow and fat, but they are slower and fatter than they were three years ago.

What im saying is that there will come a time when u cant really be naturally in shape or good looking without point effort into it. the most important thing is eating right because someday u may break ur leg and not be able to burn out those calories on the tredmill.

It's all in the genes, really... Being a serious 'hard gainer', it's quite disappointing when I see all those people around me who, without having worked out once in their lives, have nicer bodies than me, while I've been training intensively for about a year now... Then I just remember where I came from and where I'm at now, the progress I made, instead of comparing it to other, more 'lucky' people who have excellent genetic material.

And, I simply enjoy this lifestyle. The fact that I'm spending my time the best I can... every day that I don't pay attention to my nutrition; every day that I would not work out, is a sub-optimal day, a 'wasted day', so to speak. I've come to a point where I simply wouldn't know why I would ever stop this way of living, and I can't understand people who do not live their life 'to the max'. My brother, for instance. He's got the same genetics as I do, so he's still as extremely thin as I once was. Why doesn't he just eat more & work out ? It's not even that much of a burden, and it's good for his health and he'll feel better about himself...

In fact, I am not too strict about my diet and stuff... I mean, I still eat some unhealthy food now and then (well, döner kebab for instance, or fries, or a pizza...) and every weekend I'll surely spend two nights drinking lots of beer and the days afterwards, my diet won't really be as optimal (I made another topic about that but nobody answered :/ Still don't know how 'bad' that actually is).

Anyway, novice, the point of 'body building' as a hobby / lifestyle, is in fact trying to gain as much muscle mass in a period as short as possible. And doing everything to attain that goal. It may not seem the most fun hobby, but for some people there is nothing more statisfying (like abear said, most ppl enjoy the whole process of lifting, learning, counting, calculating & keeping track of everything).

Hmm... this was quite a long and useless post o_O

I am sorry I was just wondering cuz I don't know but I don't see myself being strict for like whole my life and if I lose everything I gain, I was just thinking it sux...
but well I guess u get nothing for nothing...

"Lift for the day" :)
I dont really think about lifting for my whole life. Things will change, my attitude, and I think the more I do it, the more easy Ill find it to stick to my schedule, because every day lifting becomes more "my life".
abear has grown to love it over the years, Ive grown to like it a lot more since I started a few months back - just enjoy it while you do it and dont think about the amount of hours you will do in the future :)

any gains you make take time to lose.
I really beleive this. Work out and enjoy it, if you ever stop, just eat normally and you will not get fat. your muscles will shrink but it will be a long slow process. and you can hit the gym and gain it back quick.

That's what I was looking for!! some encouraging words :D
Thanx ;)

I'd have to agree with that. It take a long time to lose muscle. As long as you continue to eat reasonably well, it's not going to just fall off of you. I've been lifting daily for a little over two years now, but a few monthes ago, I hit a dry spell where I was just too tired, or I wasn't motavated, and I just wasn't in the mood to lift. I was only lifting maybe once or twice a week, and some weeks didn't go at all. This went on for almost three monthes. I still continued to eat well, and I didn't lose any weight, nor did I gain any. I also have a friend that is a hardcore lifter, and he is frieken ripped. Definetion and everything. He got himself a girlfriend about eight monthes ago, and his lifting has been suffering due to his lack of time, and he's just as big as he ever was. I think he's lost a little definetion. But thats it. He still looks almost the same. Muscle is much harder to gain than it is to lose.

Yep, I think if you stop working out for the first few weeks you grow even more from all the rest the muscle is getting. After that there may be a point you lose some of your mass and definition but then it slows down and stays on for a long time. If you continue to eat loads and loads of food as if you were dieting to build muscle, then I can imagine fatness coming along...
But otherwise to actually lose muscle you need to cut down on protein, cut down on food in general and run for an hour 4-6 days a week. Maybe also doing full body workouts with 2 sets per body part X 40-60 reps.... Then the muscles will probably shrink :)

I really beleive working out is a lifestyle and even if you rarely work out you will make some gains. it is obviously better to workout regularly as it keeps you in shape and helps with sleep and diet and metabolism etc... If you have a fat problem even more so. Nevertheless, if you workout only now and then you will still be in better shape than if you never worked out.
