hi ^^

first of all, im 17, 5'7 and i weight 124 pounds. i really want to lose a couple and i want to do the whole lose 2 pounds a week deal.
i walk to school every day. to and from takes 30 minutes each. so basically an hour of walking 5 times a week.
Im really not sure how many calories is that because so many sites tell different things so i dont know what to believe.
At home, i have an elliptical. I cant say i do too good with it, because i cant stay on it for too long. I get tired pretty quick on it. I keep reading from alot of people how they can do 300 cals in 30 minutes or 10 calories in a minute but i really cant imagine that for me. it takes about 3 minutes to do 10 calories and thats at a slow pace .
So this got me thinking. Is running better? last week for three days i did a walking/running combination for an hour. so 30 minutes walking and 30 running.
Will i be better of running or is the elipticall still better?

I know that i have to burn about 1000 calories a day. cutting 500 from eating and 500 from exercising. that is my goal, but im having difficulty doing it.

Also, i read everywhere that the idea is to burn more calories than you consume? how does that work o_O ? like, if i eat 1500 calories a day i have to burn all that plus another 500? I just dont see that very possible.

Thanks alot ^^

Based on your stats and activity level, 2200 calories is your maintenance level. Meaning with the exercise you described and your normal activites, eating them calories will maintain your current weight. To lose weight, you want to deduct 20-25% from that puting you around 1600-1700 calories. By eating these calories below your maintenance level, assuming you keep up with your current activity, you should lose weight.

To answer your question, yes, I feel running is more effective as far as cardio. You are using more muscles to perform the function.

Hi Joanie,
What size body frame do you have? At 5'7" 125 pounds sounds pretty light! Building lean muscle mass might be a good fitness consideration :)
