i have been doing a thousand calorie program 4 times a week at my gym on the exercise bike, I eat before going a quite big meal but think this will take most of it off, plus its at least 20mins cycling there and 20 back....

Progess is slow, and I dont eat much if at all when i get back, recently i have managed to keep this up and have noticed my belly is now even bigger..... but has become very soft and more flabby etc......

Also when i put weight on its not evenly put on, it tends to give me man boobs fist Lol lol lol..... then go to the stomach etc..... i have had a six pack before, about 2 years ago on a really hard program..... but even then, the weight on my tits.... didnt completly go, and there were still a bit saggy....dont worry i am not a man that was a woman...lol

anyway.....

Define "quite a big meal"........also, is the bike the only exercise you are doing? What about the elliptical or treadmill to shake things up a bit? Are you doing any weight training; sit ups, etc?

Hi Larry,
Without knowing how tall you are, how much you weigh, whether the 1,000 calories program is what you're eating each day or what you're hoping to burn off at the gym it's hard to help.

However, here's a couple of things that you may find useful. Don't eat a big meal before you train. Your body needs time to digest it and if you exercise too soon after eating, the food will just sit in your stomach. You'll also feel a bit tired and sluggish after a meal so give it around 3 hours before training. An easy to digest snack, say a banana or yoghurt, an energy drink or a protein and carb shake an hour or so before is fine.

The best time to eat is after exercising. You have a 30 minute window directly after exercise which is the optimum time to eat some carbs as your body wants to replenish its glycogen (carb) stores. You have a 60-90 minute window after exercise to eat some protein, so if you're looking to build some muscle try eating 30g or so of protein or drink a protein shake.

As far as your belly goes, is it fat or due to bloating? The only reason you'll put on fat is if you're eating too much - which on 1,000 cals a day (if that's the case, it's probably way too low) you won't be. Common causes of bloating are an inadequate water intake and a lactose intolerance. Lactose is the sugar in milk and around 50% of white adults and 90%+ of black/asian/far eastern adults don't produce enough lactase, the enzyme that digests lactose. The result is bloating, wind, diaorreha...not pleasant! Try drinking less cow's milk or try soya milk as an alternative.

Man boobs - gynecomastia - is excess fatty, breast tissue. It's normally as a result of excess female sex hormones or steroid abuse and is pretty common. Keeping your body fat low normally minimises it, but in severe cases surgery (lipo) is normally the only option.

Any flabby tissue will be fat - burn it off with aerobic exercises and build some muscle, which will tone you up and raise your resting metabolic rate so your body burns more calories in a 24 hour period (1lb of muscle burns 14 calories a day at rest).

Hope this helps,
Marcus
