Soccer Team Dreams: Unrealistic?

i've never actually played on a soccer team before. Or really any team, except for one season where I played ball hockey on a women's league. But this year I feel like trying out for my college soccer team.

is this unrealistic? i know the rules of the game and am in reasonable shape. i'm trying to raise my stamina and endurance by running longer and working out more intensely all the time. plus id go play with my guy friends to practice before trying out.

good idea? bad idea?

How seriously do they take Soccer in Canada?
If it's like the UK then so long as you have two legs and arm hair you'll get in but I know in the US they take womens soccer seriously so you might be aiming a little high going straight for the college team

Don't you have local womens teams near you?

I would talk to the coach before hand. Chances are you're going to have a lot of the players that are there on scholorships because of their playing ability. Or they have played through high school. College sports get pretty competitive and coaches tend to take the better players.

I'm not saying that you won't make the team. But you'll have a better idea where you stand by talking to the coach and letting him know your lack of experience but desire to play.

yeah good points, im not entirely sure how serious college sports are here (i don't think it's like the US tho) but there's no harm in trying out i guess!

Soccer is meant to be a sport that welcomes new players. Yes you should try for sure and if you dont make the team dont give up. Theres always local leagues etc

I think it's a very realistic goal.

Coaches look for a lot in a player besides raw number. I've seen all state champs get turned down by even the smallest schools simply because of their attitude. So, no it's not about being the "best" player on the team.

Coaches look for people who have the heart and determination to play. If you can devote yourself to the team, then the coaches and team will love you.

Now what does it mean to devote yourself to the teams? It means on tryout day, you go there and do your best. If you fail, try again. Don't take no for an answer. Sometimes they'll accept you simply because they know you have to potential to become a great player.

Also, you can talk to other team members who played previously. Ask them what it takes, and ask if you can join in on practice with them even though you're not on the team. If a player sees that you got the heart and determination, they might accept you and train with you.

Good luck.
