Hello all,

Ok here is my problem, my dad passed away a few months ago and ever since then, I have gained lots of weight. I was also gaining a lot of weight 6 months prior to his death. So now, I am trying to lose the weight to get healthy again. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I reduced my calories down to around 1200 per day. And I exercise for an hour 4 days a week. (I work with kids, so I play dodgeball, kickball, etc ) About 2-3 days a week, I walk/jog a mile on the treadmill. I drink about 5 bottles of water a day, a few glasses of skim milk, and no soda. I eat fruits and veggies, lean beef, and lots of chicken. But I am not losing weight. I have been doing this for a 3 month now, and only lost 2lbs. What could I possibly be doing wrong. And what are some alternatives that I can do to lose weight?

no. I want to go to the doctor, but I am really scared of needles. I know, it's pitiful. Just a bad childhood experience. And plus I don't have any health insurance! Any other health conditions that could be the cause??

Weight loss for almost everybody is simply a matter of counting calories in vs. calories out. If you're only eating 1200 a day you should definitely be losing - but hormones and such can cause you to retain water, and do crazy things to your metabolism. A recent grief can certainly do that to you.

I would also recommend a doctor. They won't necessarily attack you with a needle - especially if you say you just want to talk about the issue. No expensive tests, just the visit itself. Short of that, try a nextcare or other registered nurses health center. Less expensive than doctors, but they can do just about all the same things.

OK, I'm going to go to the local health clinic soon enough. How much does getting bloodwork hurt? Is there anything I can do to make it not as bad??

I think you'll surprise yourself, needles don't hurt as much if you don't watch them go in. I think it's just a mental fear of pain that makes everyone scared of the needle. But honestly when I got bloodwork done last April and that had to take it from the worst possible spot (front of your hand) it didn't really hurt at all. Like I said, just don't watch them sticking you and you'll probably not even feel it. :)

Bloodwork really isn't very bad at all. Just relax, you'll be worried about it a little bit, but it's just a pinch and then its fine. You can tell the person drawing blood that you are nervous and don't want to see the needle, so they'll cover it up.

To see how much it hurts, pinch the back of your hand between your fingernails for just a second then let go. Sure - it hurt a little for that second - but it wasn't so bad and it went away really fast.

If you are really very nervous, try taking deep breaths and play the alphabet game with yourself. An animal for every letter of the alphabet. You'll only be down to E or F before it's all over.

I get pretty scared of needles too, but I donate blood so I've learned how to distract myself :)
