So self conscious...!

I am around 5 ft 7 and weigh about 13 stone. This obviously has resulted in my being rather fat ( due to my small height) in comparison to my weight.

More importanly, I have quite big manboobs, which completely get me down at times- they are an absolute embarrassment, and I just cannot seem to shift them whatsoever.

I've recently purchased the EA Sports Active package from the Wii and use that most days, for good hour or so, as there isn't really a gym that is near me.

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some help and advice on finally getting rid of them!

anyone :( ?

I'm not familiar with EA Sports Active but you should put a lot of emphasis on weight training. A good combination of added muscle and fat loss should help you out a lot. You mentioned not having a gym close but this should still be a good read for you. :)

I have the chest of a woman entering puberty myself. It's the fact I hate the most on me.

Here is some useful info :)

thanks for the posts.
I mainly use EA sports active for the aerobic exercises, and then use my ab trainer afterwards.

I'll go have a read at both of the links right now!

One fact you will need to remember that the body removes weight in the opposite order you put it on. If you have always had manboobs (like me) then it won't be till the other weight drops. muscle will help but you have to lose the weight first.

so basically, with what you have said, its best I stick to aerobic exercises first, to burn fat, then hit with training afterwards?

No, you should be doing both right now! Your weight loss won't be 100% fat but you can skew that percentage towards 100% if you incorporate weight training to help maintain the muscle mass you have right now. :)

phew!
Thought what I was doing was wrong :)
So if I had to forget the weight training, I could be buring off muscle mass as apposed to fat ?

Yep.

When you eat below your daily allowance for calories, your entire bodyweight goes down to fill the void. Fat and muscle are lost.

Strength training with weights helps you to retain some muscle during the weight loss period, so the end result is a higher ratio of fat:muscle lost.

Self image is hard it seems. I seem to be stuck between both worlds right now myself.

I've lost most of the weight so far in my upper body, shoulders, face, arms, and lower body, calves.

I had more of a pear shape when I started so my weight was all concentrated in the stomach and thighs. As it stands now when I look in the mirror all I see is the legs and stomach that still need to shed about 30-40 pounds in my opinion, but people that look at me see my thinned out face, and wrists and act like I am a holocaust survivor. I still have problems with the dreaded man-boobs as well I am hoping fingers firmly crossed that when I get down in to the low percentiles of body fat that they go away, but I truly fear I might have gynecomastia, especially with having a pear shaped form which is another trademark of that condition.

I have heard they cover the surgery in Canada, which is where I am from, but still the prospect of surgery is daunting. Even if they don't I think I would be willing to pay the price.

I just finished getting a weird comment from a co-worker who told me I look "cadaverous" and should gain weight.

I guess it's true though people are going to find fault with you no matter what, and getting over your own self image problems compounds the problem.

This is something I wrestled with in debate over my weight loss. If you are eating in a fairly high calorie deficit is it still worthwhile to do resistance anyway? Since from what I have heard it is next to impossible to gain muscle while in a deficit.

In the end my approach so far has been stripping my body with pure cardio, with the intention of moving over to muscle gain and toning as a focus once the bulk of it is gone.

I lost weight without resistance training and regret it. It's true that you probably can't gain much muscle while dieting, but if you don't do strength training you can certainly lose it.

How likely that is depends on how overweight you are. The more fat you have, the more prone your body is to get rid of fat. However, as you start shedding fat and your body fat % goes down your body will move over to taking more muscle. The two biggest factors to limit muscle loss are weight training and protein intake.

So it's fine if you want to start off with cardio, but the leaner you get the more beneficial it is to do strength training 2-3 times a week. Even body weight squats and wall-pushups are better than nothing.

... Unfortunately, I have no advice on getting rid of the moobs other than to keep losing fat and eventually they'll have to give in! ... 70 lbs down and I still have my Australian biceps (you know where all the flab just hangs down under!)

first of all.. lmao @ the Australian biceps comment, thats a keeper.

Second, to the OP, unless you are eating an inordinate amount of estrogen-like things... like.. idunno.. eating a kg of soy bean things every day or whatnot... then the way to go is to loose fat until the moobs go away. if you ARE eating massive amounts of tofu or other things that increases your amount of girly hormones then I'd suggest both loosing weight and changing your diet :)

If it isn't clear from my tone, btw, chances are that you aren't getting massive amount of estrogen like stuff going around your veins :) so yeah, keep loosing weight, keep doing resistance training to at least maintain the muscles you have and they will go away eventually.

if you end up being super slim with huge manboobss then go see doctor, then it might be a hormonal problem.. but the ratio of people who thinks they have a hormonal problem to people who actually have one is... huge :p usually its a fat thing and it will go away with the fat.

So... yeah! :) keep doing what you're doing and you'll get there, promise.

You can lose the weight much faster without any equipment or wii sports package. Just run in place, I do this in the winter since I dont care for treadmills. Stretch out, warm up for a few minutes, run as fast as you can for 10 seconds and then walk and catch your breath for 30-50 seconds and repeat for 20-30 minutes and do a warm down. This routine is called high intensity interval training and it beats running and raises your metabolism for a long period of time afterwards. Weight training is important too, you need to work your muscles so they stay healthy as you lose weight. Do it and get rid of the moobs!

Hello everyone,
Just thought I'd update everyone.

Since posting this thread, I quit the weight loss, but last month, I got back into it, and have lost half a stone, and counting :)
