Skipping

I'm trying to mix up my fitness routine. I love running and cycling. However I quite fancy trying skipping. I'd love to get your thoughts on this? Is this a combination of cardio and endurance?

Many Thanks
Jen

It depends on how long you keep going for. If you manage a minute and collapse, then it is low level endurance. If you keep going for 20 minutes with very few breaks, that is cardio.
It is a good one because you can vary it around altering the intensity etc. and building up mobility and coordination while improving endurance and stamina.
I haven't done any serious skipping in years.

I can run 45 mins - 12 min mile quite easily - so I am aiming for endurance. I'll give it a try tonight - just reading up on rope length - I'll definitely have to cut the rope - I'm only 5' tall and the rope length is approx. 9'. Based on my calcs - I'll need to cut off at least 1' to use it efficiently.

Does skipping help core strength?

If you properly engage your core, most anything helps to improve it.

As a runner, watch out for sore Achilles tendons after a longish rope session and be sure to stretch your lower legs after the workout. I love it, but have to be careful as I am prone to Achilles tendonitis and rope skipping aggravates it.

I really enjoyed my session last night. Only managed approx. 15 mins though - my sore knee stopped me going any further. At the moment I tend to stop any workout I'm doing when my knee gets really sore, as I know it's not going to be easy the next day.

Thank you so much for your information folks.

Quick question - I have inflamed ligaments in my knees - could skipping make this worse?

Have a good weekend folks!

Possibly. A lot depends on which ligaments and what aggravates them obviously. Impact problems would likely stop you running so I imagine that side would be OK but skipping is a very different activity.
There is a guy who comes on here occasionally Jrahien who is very good at this type of thing. He would need as much detail as possible of course regarding which ligaments and any advisories you have been given. I have often said on here that if I give remedial advice and he gives an alternative, go with his, he is far better on this than me.
