So,in addition to jogging every other day,I have decided to buy a skipping rope to help burn calories and get into shape.I've heard it being a brilliant way to exercise.

Are there any keen skippers here? :D

If so,what would you suggest to be super workout?
How long should a session be to make a difference?

SKIPPING!

ooo...I loath it... hate it...suck at it....but going to work on it!

gohomejes and i are trying to have a skipping competition! Friendly of course (and she's kicking my butt!! hehe)

but what I do, is I do it in intervals. Skipping is fantastic cardio (and great for building up your arms and legs) ... so I'm starting out doing 30 sec skipping, then 30 sec rest. If I don't have a watch, I count my skips - 30 skips (which is about 1 sec each cause I go slow), then count to 30 while I rest! I do it for as long as I can! And each time I increase my skipping time!

let us know how you do! :) skipping is fantastic for you!

^^ hehe! Ah that did make me smile-how you hate it but you're still keeping at it!That's really cool and sounds like an excellent plan!I think I may join you on that (and i'll log it in my diary ;) oooo yeah!hehe) doing it in intervals.I haven't quiet got the pace right yet when doing any exercising hehe so doing 30 secs of skipping then 30 secs of rest sounds most managable!Brilliant. How long have you been skipping for?
Hmmm I'm just wondering where I'll do it...I don't have a backgarden hehe!I'm not sure how skipping down the street will go down around where I live! :D I think I have enough space indoors!

skipping is really, really, really, painful! LOL.. in a good way.
I was pretty good at it at one time, and with a little practice, anyone can do it.
I find that switching feet (sort of like running or skipping in place) makes it much more enjoyable for me, but it's really been a long time.

Oh goodness!Painful in a good way!?pushing for the burn!haha, although it is more likely I'll catch my foot somehow and fall over!Pretty clumsy I am!
You should join me in starting it up again!Did it take you long to get the knack of it and get good at it? :D I ordered mine this morning and they'll hopefully be coming in a couple of days and as soon as I get them i'll be giving it a go!

Nah, it's really easy once you get the hang of it... sort of like riding a bicycle. It's quite intensive, so I recommend that you do it as part of a workout, not a workout by itself.
Oh, it's actually really hard to trip yourself by jumping rope. Most likely, it will just caught under your foot.

Emerald,
I've taken up skipping rope as part of my HIIT training protocol. The results have been amazing. The effectiveness comes in the fact that the more muscles you utilize in performing an exercise, the higher the energy demands of your muscles. That results in more calories depending on how you perform the exercise.
I don't know if you're there yet fitness wise. The most intense way to do it is with high knee sprints. The rope's revolution will pass each time your knee goes up. I count 150 total revolutions. This can last from 1 min to 1 min 20 seconds (because I will often step on the rope). I rest for 1 min and perform another set. I perform ten of these intervals sets. Ten sets of these is all one needs to obtain a tremendous workout.
Don't mimic my protocol if you're not there.. To you or anyone, build up in terms of your intensity. The sky's the limit in what jumping rope can do. Many boxers attest to this.

I'm a skipper!

I started randomly. One day after my run around my neighborhood, I was just walking up and down the length of our garage trying to get my heart rate back to normal and I saw my mom's jumprope. I used to be a CRAZY jumproper (lol) back in….3rd grade =P I knew sooo many tricks. I was curious as to how I would do and oh man, I failed. I was dying after 30 seconds. DYING. One thing I cannot accept is defeat. I hate not doing well at something! So it's become a challenge. Jill (Tik) and I have been challenging each other and I love it. It's motivation and encouraging!

Like others have mentioned, it's a great workout. When I first started, I did was Jill was doing. Jumped for 30-60 seconds and then a 15-25 second break. Now I'm trying something a little different. You jump up with both feet, right? Now when I get tired instead of coming to a fullstop I lift one foot first and the other follows. It's easier and I'll do that for about 20 seconds to get my heart rate down a bit.

Butttt then I was doing some reading on here and I think jumprope would be an amazing way for me to do some HIIT in my gym routine so I plan on doing that tomorrow.

Sometimes I'll run around the first block in my neighborhood (~0.30 miles) and then jumprope for 60 seconds and then run again. Do that 3 times in a row.

There are soooo many things you can do.

Like Jill said, let us know how you enjoy it!
