Side planks- work obliques?

I just started targeting my core today. Crunches and reverse crunches worked for me, but I need something to target my obliques. I couldn't really get a handle on the bicycle crunches or twisting crunches, but side planks seem to be good. Will side planks help in getting my obliques to show up? I have a very low BF, so that's not a problem.
 
Obliques don't have much potential for growth in the first place, but i'm not saying they can't grow. Side planks will hit the obliques, and its an excellen stabilization exercise.
