Shoulder pain

hi all

when i do a shoulder press i get pain in my left shoulder, the best way to describe it is that it happens when my hand goes from shoulder to head height but is ok for the rest of the rep, until i am lowering the weight and again it hurts from head height down to when the weight is at rest. i have gotten this pain on and off over a number of weeks and had being doing shoulder presses through a smaller ROM (from just over head height to fully extended and back to head height again). Yesterday for the first time my shoulder starting hurting again but this time it was during an incline bench,

the pain i get is not the normal pain/uncomfortable feeling you normally feel when working out but it is a more sever pain.

any help on this would be great, i am really interested in finding out what it is; strained muscle, or something else, and the best way of threating it, or is it just rest that is needed? Or should i just strap it and get on with the training??

thanks for any help

Only an orthopedist can diagnose you. That said, military presses are a leading cause of rotator cuff inflammation and tears.

Please do some research before making such outrageous claims. The leading causes of rotator cuff inflammation and tears are actual trauma and repetitive strain. Activities that require vigorous swinging motions over a large range of motion are the culprits. Pitchers, quarterbacks, tennis players, volleyball players, shotput throwers, kayakers, etc. Choir conductors and kids playing nintendo wii are more likely to have a rotator cuff tear than a person who chronically does military presses with good form. Military presses are actually used as an advanced stage rehab exercise.

To Massey:
Pain during an exercise is usually the sign of an injury or imbalance that needs to be addressed. Do not strap it and get on with the training, you should see a Sports Physician for an assessment. It sounds like a rotator cuff issue. The best way to rehab it is to go to a professional for a proper routine.

If you can't afford it, or it is not an option... Please stop the exercises that are triggering the pain all together (limited ROM or not) and ice it everyday. 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, 10 minutes on. Twice a day. This will help reduce any inflammation. After 3-4 days of that, ice once a day for 15 minutes and incorporate 3 sets of 30 second shoulder stretches at different times in the day. In another week or so, PM me with how you are doing and I will judge whether to give you some exercises or enforce the referral to a local practitioner.

I hope that helps!

I would suggest you a good and regular heat massage on your shoulders. Natural and pure sesame oil will definitely help you. Also add good diet to your meals. Yoga postures will also help you.

Sounds like what you are experiencing is referred to as a painful arch, it hurts in a small range of motion then becomes painfree throughout the rest of the motion. this is typically caused form an anatomical deficit or poor biomechanics in the shoulder that is causing impingment on the tendons of the rotator cuff. I would recommend to discontinue the overhead motions and focus on shoulder stability exercises that include RTC strengthening to help with improving the dynamics of your shoulder. Pain is your guide, if it hurts don't do it and of course there is no substitute for sound medical advice from your own MD/DO.
Good luck
