Sport Should I invest in supplements (eg. protein powder, mass gainer, etc.) to help me get in better shape?

I've been struggling with my fitness goals for the longest time. I'm now 36 and about to turn 37, which marks the end of the 17th year I've been trying to obtain the physique of my dreams. I'd like to think that I work pretty hard when it comes to hustling at the gym. I remember back in uni when I was still super duper skinny, my friends would invite me to go workout every now and then, and soon, I was addicted to working out. Throughout my undergrad years, I saw the most improvement in my body. My shoulders were broader. My muscles were toner. But they definitely weren't at a place where someone would look at me and think, "wow, he sure has some big guns". I still continued to workout up until I was around 29 years old. That's when I realized I was in the biggest plateau that just completely smashed by tremendous motivation and drive that I had found during my early 20's. From then until around I was 34, I kinda just let my body go. Got a nice rounded family pack instead of the six pack I always wanted. The definition in my muscles also faded quite a bit. I decided to start turning it around again 2 years ago since I was depressed with how I looked: a "skinny-fat" kinda look where everything except my belly was thinning out.

So as I'm now in the progress of trying to bring myself back to square one and pursue my fitness dream again, I'd just like to ask if it's a good idea to invest in supplements for my journey. I've always been an advocate of hard work and real food being the two things that will bring me to my goal, but now that I'm in my 30's, going that route just doesn't seem too real for me anymore. I've started reading a bunch of random articles like this one on protein powders and such, so maybe perhaps someone could recommend me something that just really brought them awesome results for the work they put in at the gym? I don't know what's the best option for me at this point. I'd like to say that I've done some "online research" on supplements, but would feel much more comfortable taking advice from someone willing to share. Should I continue what I did back then? (Because I know for sure that my metabolism is slower now than back then, but I'm not sure if that means I'll be able to grow big muscles.) Or would supplements be a good thing to consider using? (not entirely sure what the full list of effects that something like protein powder would have) I'd appreciate any comment or suggestion on this post. Thanks for reading this.

Quick question, does anyone know about this product? Whether it works? Thanks for any help.
