I am 6' 5" and about 280 lbs. I have become hypertensive over the last 3-4 years, during which I also went from around 200 lbs to 280. I am not really focusing on weight loss right now, for the last month I have been focusing on making all of my own meals, and excersising every day. I have a treadmill, I want to get to a point where I can jog on it every day, but I have been working on brisk walking.
It seems like I can walk indefinately at about 3mph, the problem is my heart rate doesn't get up enough. At 3.5mph I generally get to my desired heart rate, start sweating, etc. The problem is at 3.5 mph my shins start hurting, generally after half a mile. When I first started I just powered through it, hoping my shins would feel better as I kept it up, but about 1 1/2 weeks in my shins would hurt right after starting exercise.
So I dropped the mph to 3 mph, and would increase it to 3.5 for 1/4 mile then drop it down. After 3-5 days of this even that became really painful. So I took a day off, did it again got pain, took two days off, did it again got pain, then I took 4 days off ending yesterday, when i did a mile, I did half at 3mph, half at 3.5, I got almost no pain. Today I tried 1 1/4 mile 1/2 a mile at 3mph, 3/4 mile at 3.5, today my shins started to hurt agian.
Generally at 1/4 mile at 3.5 my shins start to feel a little tight, by 1/2 mile they start to feel really tight, and at 3/4 - 1 mile they really start to hurt.
I'm not sure how hard I should push myself, I want to get to 3 miles per day at 4 mph as soon as possible, and endurance wise I feel like I could do that, but my stupid shins are holding me back. Any suggestions on how I should pace myself?
