Shin Splints

Hey everyone Im new to the forum and really think its great, Im 49 years old and about 60 pounds over what I need to weigh. I have been working hard since the middle of January I work at night and every morning at 3:00AM I walk on the track on the 28th floor in my buliding for about 3 miles. Cut my breads out and have dropped 16 pounds and 1 pant size. I am soo stoked but now I have a VERY painful case of shin splints, it was in one leg and now its in the other can barely walk sometimes. Please if you have any ideas help me. I still limp around the track because I feel guilty if I dont. Will ice or heat help get rid of these things they are sooo painful. Thanks to all in the forum you dont know how helpfuk you are.

thanks cmsstewart, yes they really hurt bad. Wish these on no one. I went to the link and will try the streches it talks about.

Here is your solution

It has been only a month since you started your weight loss program. Your feet, knees and shins are absorbing about 70% of your entire wieght with each step. On top of that your muscles, which were not there before are building themselves up. Your entire body including your shins should ache until our muscles and joints fully adjust and more wieght is shed.
In addition wearing proper shoes that fit your feet helps tremendoulsy.
Inserting shoe insoles in order to absorb the shock impact of all the excess weight your still carrying should alleviate the problem.

Dealing w/ killer shin splints

HI..I dont know about anyone else..but I have found especially when i start kicking it up a notch or just really getting serious something happens and i push too hard w/ out warming up and i get shin splints..and they freekin kill. Soo I have found thru some research what works & i havent had them since. I have found that before I walk my workout circuit...I walk on my heels as long as I can... usually i try to do 2 30 sec intervals...then I stand and tap one foot w/ my toes pointed forward..as fast as i can.. then switch and do the other. I also do a quick stretch and start out w/ long deliberate strides for my first block, block and a half..then im good to go. Just thought Id share!

i notice i tend to get shin splints when walking outside, on the hard concrete. i stretch beforehand, bought new shoes, and had to tape my leg for a while. but all is good now. except if i do too much i'll start getting blisters and then have to cool it for a day or two.

Shin Splints from walking?

I've been walking for about an hour a day and trying to run here and there to build up. The problem is that I am experiencing extreme pain in the front of my legs (almost like on the bone!) and in the calves! It's even hard to walk up stairs.

What is going on here? Should I stick to grassy areas and not pavement. I now have the motivation but my body isn't cooperating!

I had the same problem for the first 2 weeks , but then it just went away- It would also seem towards the end of the trek they would ease up too. Maybe some good streches before you start?

I had the same thing when I started walking. I didn't really 'excerise' by walking or jogging and after the first couple times. My legs would be dieing, the area where you are talking about is probally the most normal pain you can get. You're doing fine :) Keep it up it goes away

Hi DreamSeeker,
I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing shin splints - I had a case of them so bad not too long ago, I was actually concerned I had a stress fracture. Although I walk daily, and have been for quite a long time, I had walked one night, too fast, too drunk and hadn't warmed up - AT ALL ;)

The pain was horrible, even to the touch.

The first few days after the injury, I kept walking on it despite the pain. Football players still play with shin splints.

However, I took a few days off (probably day 5 thru day 8 after the injury), and it really helped. It took almost two weeks for the pain to truly go away.

I now do a lot of stretching before every walk.

Good luck and I hope it clears up quickly for you!

It can be a pretty severe problem, especially for athletes. I had them really bad when I ran track in high school. Lots of stretching will do the trick IF done correctly. DONT stretch cold. Walk a block or two gently to warm up the muscles. Then stretch. Lay on your back, one leg straight up and one bent, knee up. The straight up leg, push your toes forward as hard for a count of ten. Then bring your toes down as hard as possible for a count of ten. Do ten reps of each on both legs. Before and after your workout if possible. This 5 minutes of work will save you 24 hours or more of pain.

Shin Splints?

Last week I started jogging, I had decided to loose weight... Things went well untill thursday when my legs and ankles started hurting, I took the weekend off and went back today and couldnt even finish my jogging because my legs wouldnt let me. Mind you, I'm only 17.

So I come back after a horrible workout (it even hurt to walk after trying to jog) ..I do some research and come up with Shin Splints as a reason for my leg pain.

Damn.

But I dont want to give up that easy, I want to continue to work out.. But I dont know what I can do while my legs heal.

Do any of you know any good cardio workouts besides jogging? I really dont want to do 2 hours of walking, But I will if I have to... I don't have a bike either.

What are some of my exercise options?

Friend recommended me to start slow by walking. That's what I'm doing currently before starting to jog. If you get any other hints, I'd like to know.

Goodluck :)

Really, your only choice is to resort to a low/no impact exercise like swimming, stationary bike, elliptical, etc.

I know you said you don't have anything else at your disposal, but if you really want to do the aerobics, you are going to have to find an alternative to jogging.

man i know what your going through, i've gone through 2 weight loss and regains and the last one and the one im on now have both given me shin splints...check your shoes make sure they are good running shoes and they're not worn out or nothin...took me about a month to a month and a half of NOT doing any impact cardio (running, walking, jump rope, etc..) to recover and start running again...started back slow and tried to hit as much grass while running to prevent such hard impact...overtraining is one of the causes of shin splints as well so watch that...this time after getting shin splints i joined a gym and i do the elliptical machine while my splints heal up a bit to allow me to run outside again....the elliptical to me is like running without striking the ground so i love it b/c running was and still is my all time favorite for loosing weight...so try out an ellptical machine and when u start back running outside take it easy and get good shoes!

Why am I constantly getting shin-splints?

I have read about them but man is it annoying how OFTEN I get them.

I bought new shoes from Adidas with the new technology stuff for shin-splints
I run on grass at the park
I don't run that much by 2-3 times a week IF THAT

I don't like lifting weights so I decided to start my diet by running and I am roughly 30-40 pounds heavier then I have ever been in my life. Is it all that pounds putting pressure on my shins or....what?

It's aggravating. My shins are sore after running for the 3rd time in 2 weeks yesterday.

The problem with running is that most bodies are not conditioned for it. Very few of the people I train run, period. It is very taxing on the body and the more weight you have on you and worse your flexibility and posture, the more likely it is going to do more harm then good.

Instead of doing repetitive running choose short bouts of aggressive training instead or work in intervals. Cone training, jumping jacks, jogging in place all
intervals mixed with walking and high kick walks. These things give you more intensity but allow for less constant pressure on the body and legs.

Also do not ignore resistance training, it is important in fat loss and preserving muscle.

Will do. I guess I will get my fat ass to the gym and start doing some leg exercises weight wise to maybe get them in shape before I run
