Saying Hi and introducing myself

Hi everyone,

I found this forum a couple of days ago and I’ve been monitoring it since then. I think that this is a very supportive community and that it would help me get out of my slump.

The New Year has now passed and it is time for me to shed the pounds. It’s interesting to see how gaining pounds deeply affects us. I never was the skinny type of guy but I used to be very active. I was practicing Karate, playing soccer, hiking, scuba diving and much more. Some 15 years ago, I stopped, for no apparent reasons, to be active. I slowly stopped and finally completely stopped doing anything almost 12 years ago. I have since then gained over 50 pounds and a lot of physical problems. You have no idea (hummm, I’m sure most of you do  ) how it affects my life. I have lost all self esteem. I don’t want to go to the beach and it’s out of question to remove my shirt during the summer. I avoid going to public pools because I think I look like a whale. I have no energy with my kids and that’s a big motivation for change.

I think it’s the first time I’m really motivated and committed to loosing weight. I have never accepted help from anyone before and I usually try to bite the hands that are trying to feed me (especially the skinny ones :D ). I want this to stop and I guess this is why I’m coming to this board. The people that are trying to help here are in the same situation. So, let’s make of 2007 the year for changes!

Hello Whyves, and welcome. I understand! And I commend you for your new commitment and motivation. It will be worth it.

I know when and why I stopped with all the fun active stuff that used to keep my weight in check. I used to play on a softball and volleyball league, worked out at the gym, swam regularly, walked a lot, danced a lot, etc..... Then I got married. My husband didn't want to do any of those things, so I gave them up, and through the years we've settled into the habit: come home from work, eat dinner, watch tv, read and snack. Ice cream, cookies or brownies for dessert every night.

Now, I almost 50 years old, he's 55 years old. I've gained 50 pounds over the last 15 years. He's gained 55. Now, our bodies hurts when we do things. But, we can't live like this. Our health is at stake. Our future is at stake. It sucks bigtime. So, it's time to change our eating habits and change our activity and fitness levels.

Good luck to you on your journey!

Welcome to the forums.

Good on you for making the choice to sort stuff out. Hope to see more of you :)

LisaAnnie, Wishes,

Thank you for the nice welcome!

LisaAnnie,

In my case, it's a little bit strange, my wife was not as active as me but she was nonetheless. I even introduced her to some of my activities. However, I'm the type of guy that likes to please other people and will deny himself in order to please other. One thing led to another and I finally entirely stopped doing things for myself. Now I realise this and will set time aside for myself.

I wish you good luck in reclaiming your own energy. My parents are over 60 and are in much much much better shape then me. They have a very good life and it's mostly due to the fact that are very active doing all sort of things and sports.
