Running shoe advice

I have just started running!

When I say that, I mean I have just started the couch to 5k program so it's not quite running yet, but I will get there!

I used to run every day and I loved it, so I can see this being a long term thing.

My question is this: running shoes. At the moment Im wearing battered old £10 trainers, which I know are probably terrible to run in! I have been known to have problems with my feet and knees in the past (I had chondromalacia patella, and I have fairly flat feet) and I understand it is important that I get new ones asap!

I have looked into it a bit and I don't know where to start!

Requirements:
1) Running on pavement mainly.
2) High stability, preferably a shaped sole to lift my arches.
3) Light and not clumpy!
4) I am only a poor student, so the cheaper the better, though I'm willing to think of it as an investment.

Any advice would be very appreciated!

I would find a running shoe store in your area - and be properly fitted for a pair of runnig shoes.. Everyone's foot is different.. and you probably want the best shoe for your foot.. Once you get a shoe reccommendation - that feels comfortable to your foot... you can always take a day or so and research it on the internet for the best price... (is that unethical to spend a commissioned employees time and then not buy from him? probably :D

One word on shoe shopping - don't go in the morning, go later in the day it's when your foot is the biggest and most swollen so youo will be guarenteed the best fit.

Ooo thanks for all the speedy replies guys!

I did a bit of browsing online, I tried using the RunningWorld shoe finder, and came up with Nike air equalon, as the best suggestion for me!

Ive also found a few sports shops near me so I might make a little trip into town next week and try some on and get some more advice!
