Running really hurts my shins

I get super bad shinsplints when i run sometimes, and other times im just dandy! Is there something i'm doing wrong with my stride or something when i get horrible splints or is that just an off day? Can anyone relate?

I was just looking through this website posted by baserun in another thread, and saw this artical which may help you.

I use to get the same problem years ago and seems to have gone away by itself over time, It use to occur when I walked to school with my dad and had to streach my pace out to keep up with him. I have really tight calf mussles because I spent all my childhood on a trampoline.

had this problem

Great info in the post above....But it might be where you are running as well.

Near my house I have a park, with a lake and a track around it, nice flat area, I can run 2 miles, no pain.

now my street is a 1/4 long, so I can use it as a track, but my street is very hilly and has sidewalks that are on a angle, going sideways, that is not so good.

Anyway, I ran a few times around my street, same distance...started getting shin splints, I stopped, I returned tot he lake area...no problems.

The street and the hills plus angle sidewalks, was just bad for my legs and it is not worth the injury, so I go to the lake and been good since.

Check the area you are running and also follow the advice above, I am big into stretching, it is key.

Thank you so much for that information! That site that you showed me gave me some really good ideas, i'll definitley take their advice! Also I do run on hilly pavemet and crooked sidewalks - maybe i should try to switch things up and try something less straining!

yes

it is not so much the hills, but the crooked Sidewalks that is doing you in. basically you are twisting your ankle and your body is trying to adjust. The ankle does not like to do that and your frontal shin muscles try to compensate, which they can't, that equals shin splints.

Hills are OK, especially slight hills, but a nice even running surface is the Key. go to a local High school and jog their track if you can.

Check local running clubs if you can.

Stay away from the crookied sidewalk.....they are EVIL!! LOL

You could have a problem with foot pronation and/or bad shoes... that was my problem... my right foot pronates more than the left... and I get shin splits on that leg... UNTIL... I got a pair of shoes designed to reduce pronation... now shin splints are going away... as is my right leg achilles tendonitis...
