Run before lifting?

Hi -

My normal workout routine consists of a short 20 minute run, followed by about 45 minutes of medium lifting. I have been told that I should lift first and then run.. Is this true? and why?

Thanks!

just started working out with a trainer and just happened to ask the same question and the only reason she gave me is that you'd tired easily, if you do some cardio workout first. hope this helps!

Id suggest doing your primary goal first. EG if your primary goal is to get aerobically fit, run first, and put a lot of effort into it, then do some weights.

Conversly, if your main goal is to get stronger muscles, do 5 minutes of cardio to warm up first, then hit the weights with all your effort.

If you want to acheivge both goals, try 5 minute warm up, then weights, then on a seperate day, High Intensity Interval Training.

You want to expend most of your energy in the activity you want to gain most from. Theres no point running if that leaves you so tired you cant make decent gains on the weights (if weights is your goal), or vice versa.

Lifting predominatly uses glycogen (glucose or sugar that is stored in your muscle and liver). If you lift first, then run. The idea is that glycogen levels will be low, therefore you will utilize more fat as an energy source during exercise.

Perform the run first and you'll decrease glycogen levels as well thus making your weight workout less intense/effective perhaps.
