rugby player, stiff lower legs and knee pain 2 days after training session

Ok here we go just going to paint out my scenario see if any of you people can help me.

I am a rugby player (prop) have been playing alot the last 2 years.

I am a big lad 120 kgs / 19 stone 'ish ( working on weight loss )

I have rugby practice twice a week for 1,5 - 2 hours a time.

Tuesdays 2 hour session feel good get around the ptich do my job.

wednsday feel a bit stiff but ok,

Then comes Thursday morning my lower legs are like cement and my knees ache alot. I can then chosse to go practice with my squad and suck up the knee pain all the way through my session, or take a day off.

We play matches on Saturdays if I have taken the Thursday off I am great if I havent I am in some pain and feel rather held back.

Tuesdays after matches I have recovered and am usually fine.

Everyday I dont play a match or have a rugby session I go for a 1 km swim at the local pool and massage my lower legs in the sauna.

I started this 2 months ago and it helps a litle but not enough.

Latley the very bottom of my achilles tendons where thye attach to my ancle / heel are very stiff in the mornings they tend to be better after some form of exercise/swimming.

ibuprofen helps a litle but is not really a long term solution for me.

As mentioned above I have been going for 2 years now battled my way through shin splints etc, and I am wondering when my recovery time will lower.

Any ideas on how I can recover faster would be great.

Recovery drinks?

Any ideas desperateto try anything to get me back on track.

Cheers

Nick.

Your leg problems

Alright byt,

You've just described the exact same thing I just went through last season. The problem is with your feet. It sounds like you have a pronated or supprinated posture with your feet. See a physio or your doctor and they may recommend orthotic inserts to correct the posture. A term you might be familiar with is "fallen arches".

I got custom made orthotics a few months ago and the achilles pain cleared up within a week and then my leg problems got progressively better and now I'm back to training and playing.

Hopefully this will save you a lot of time and frustration,
Dan

Yeah pal achilles pain is gone now after a rest and I am back running couple times a week spinning swimmming etc.

I think the prob came because my orthopedic inserts where all worn out I use the ones where you warm them put them in your shoes then step in them to make them fit.

Cheers anyways pal.

I'm not sure what is causing your chronic aches, maybe the fallen arch problem has a lot to do with it. However, soft tissue manipulation is going to be beneficial in almost all cases of muscle recovery. Used daily before and or after workouts, use one or a combo of tennis ball or myoball therapy, foam rollers, 4" + PVC pipe will work, shiatsubag, and people use "the stick". I think the shiatsubag is a good cross between myoballs and foam rollers, and both use your body weight. The stick is good for the legs, but it fairly limited for the upper body.

You can find online video or photo instruction on most of them'. If you are a rich man, see a massage practitioner regularly and use the other techniques in between sessions.

Good luck with it.
