Ok so I've decided to start a diary to track my progress. Technically I still ahve to weigh myself but I believe my start weight/current weight is about 205 lbs. My goal is to be a size 6/8.... so I figure I'll weigh about 150 lbs then??

June 28, 2010

Went to the gym did 20 mins HIIT cardio and 25 mins of lower body weights and abs. Approximate total calories for the day is uncertain...... food intake was:

2 cups coffee with milk and sugar
1.5 litres of water
1 protein shake (mixed with water)
2 yogurt cups (70 cals total)
1 med size apple
1 banana
1 cheese biscuit (my bad)
6 ritz type crackers (100 cals)
1 cup shreddies with 1/2 cup milk and 1 tsp sugar
1 cup corn pops (again my bad) with 1/2 cup milk

June 29, 2010

Did the gym again... 20 mins HIIT cardio plus 25 mins upper body weights and abs (need to work on getting to gym a bit earlier so I can get 1-1.5 hrs in, instead of about 45-55 mins).

Food for the day (including my snakcs for all day at work):

1 cup corn pops (my bad... damn things are addictive) w/ 1/2 cup milk
1 litre water
5 grape tomatoes
1 celery stalk
6 slices cucumber
1 bartlett pear
1 protein shake (mixed with water)
1 med size apple
6 ritz type crackers (100 cals)
2 yogurt cups (70 cals combined)
1 cup coffee w/ milk and sugar

And for supper, probably a low fat egg sandwich (english muffin, egg, no fat cheese and no fat ham) or some grilled meat.... maybe chicken or steak.

Will do my best to stay away from teh damn corn pops. LOL

LOL! Stay away from the corn pops!

Good Job on getting to the gym. I should be utilizing my membership better, but my baby tosses and turns all night, and by the time he is sound, I can't go to the gym and get enough sleep too. What is HIIT? How do the protein shakes taste? I just can't bring myself to try them.

Congrats on getting started and heading to the gym. Getting started is the toughest part. After 2 weeks, its smooth sailing.

Don't feel the need to spend 1 1/2 hours or more in the gym. 45min to an hour is fine for most people. Some people only spend a half hour or less, get their weight lifting in, and then they're done. More time in the gym does not always equal faster/better results. There is always a limit.

You might want to reassess your diet. I know you're against counting calories and what not, but you should probably be eating at least 1500-2000 calories a day to lose weight. Your maintenance is probably close to 2500 or more. I'm just guessing, but you can calculate your BMR online or with the formula in the "How many calories should I eat sticky" And if you're doing true HIIT AND lifting weights, your body will need even more calories to sustain all that intense working out. You might feel fine now, but eventually it will catch up with you. I mean, it looks like most of the real food your eating is some fruit and veggies, which is fine, but there is like no calories there. Most of your calories are coming from cereals and milk and crackers and protein shakes. That stuff is all fine to have, but shouldn't be the majority of your daily calories IMO. Your dinner today sounds really good though, and likely the best thing you'll have eaten in 2 days.

One last sell for counting calories - if you're already keeping track and writing down what you eat, it doesn't take too much more effort to tally up the calories.

OK I'm done now :p You're doing great so far, just giving you a couple tips so you could be doing even better!

NJ..... LOL.... yeah those damn corn pops are going to be the end of me.... normally I don't eat those kinds of cereals but I have a weakness for corn pops LOL. My usual cereal is shredded wheat or special K. Sometimes shreddies just for a change..... winter time it's oatmeal with chopped apples and cinnamon... YUMMY :). Protein shakes... meh.... I mix 100% hydrolyzed whey protein (chocolate flavoured and low/no carb) with water and chug it back. You get used to it; most people mix it with milk but being that I'm hypoglycemic, I try to watch the sugars. It does kind of kill the chocolate cravings though, and that's a good thing. :) Don't worry about the gym; go when you can.... something is better than nothing :). HUGS XOXO

Mar1984.... I know I'm getting next to no calories -that's the point LOL. But I do understand what you're saying. And yeah, I agree if I"m writing stuff down it doesn't take much more extra effort to actually calculate calories. I figure my maintenance requirements (without exercise) is about 2000 cals/day give or take a few hundred, given that I'm about 205 lbs. I also do agree that with the exercise I would need more calories..... but isn't the point to reduce caloreis and increase exercise so your body is in a state of deficit and has to use the fat stores? It's really a bit of a balancing act though..... also, I was thinking last night (dangerous game I know), about human evolution.... we're naturally hunter gatherers, and eventually we learned to grow food (agriculture). So.... if we evolved hunting and gathering whatever was around, then doesn't it make sense that if I eat that way, it's good for me? So... the veggies I can pick at, and the meat, etc.... all things my body needs and uses regardless of calories no? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on that....

cheers,

Sure you can graze on veggies and stuff all you want, but the foods we have around now are not the same foods early humans had available when they were evolving, and not in the same quantities. You weren't going to find the corn pops to graze on thousands of years ago :p Now, grazing is as easy as heading down to the supermarket to find food. Our ancestors ate what they found when they found it because they didn't know when their next meal would be, stored excess as fat, and slowed down metabolism to live off the fat during times of famine. 10,000 years from now, Humans may evolve to not storing as much food as fat, if food remains as available as it is now.

You can graze all you want, but it still comes down to calories. If you only eat 300 calories a day, no doubt you're going to lose weight, but you're going to lose muscle mass as well, and possibly make yourself really sick do to malnutrition. The less calories you eat, the more you really have to make sure you're getting the right foods, which is why I pointed out that the foods where the majority of your already low calorie diet is coming from are not really the right foods for giving your body enough of the nutrients it needs long term.

Not to mention, the less you eat, the faster your body adapts to a lower input. Its sometimes called "starvation mode", but its more of an adaptation. One of those evolved traits. If your body is not getting enough food and nutrients, it will adapt and slow down body processes to conserve as much as possible. It makes it harder to lose weight when your body is trying to preserve your energy stores. The simplest explanation is your normal maintenance calorie level starts to drop. You'll most likely continue to lose weight if you keep practically starving yourself, but if you ever go off the wagon, you'll gain weight quickly if you start eating above a maintenance level that has already been lowered.

It doesn't have to be "eat as little as possible, and work out as much as possible". Its more "eat as much as possible to lose weight, and work out appropriately". Figure out your BMR, then subtract 500 calories for every lb you want to lose a week. Based on your current information, you could try to lose up to 2lbs per week, or 1000 calories less than your BMR, but don't go less than 1200 calories per day. And don't guess what your BMR is, calculate it! at the very least, it would be about 10x your current body weight if you were a slug all day. BMR can easily be as much as 15x your current body weight, which could be 3000 calories for you, especially if you're doing HIIT and weight lifting.

If you want to lose weight fast, you might look up "The Rapid Weight Loss Handbook" by lyle mcdonald. It is based on a very limited low calorie diet, but educates on how to get enough nutrients while on the diet, how to eat after the diet, and how to hold onto muscle mass while dieting. That way, if you want to starve yourself, at least your doing it right :p

Matt

I agree, you don'\t want to cut down your calories too much.

When I lost 45lbs previously, I hit a wall at that point, since I had cut down my calories too much. I started at 265lbs, and was eating 1200-1400 calories/day, most days. That wasn't enough. So yes, I had great weight loss, but once I got to 220lbs I was stuck there for a year until I finally gave up. Also, eating that little is not sustainable for a long time (trust me). So it is best to start things off right and not cut back on your calories too much. :)

Ok so add a big slice of low fat lasagna to the food lis (OMG it was so good).

Just did the gym thing today.... I am SOOO sore. I wanted to do abs again but they weren't willing to cooperate :p. So I did my 20 mins HIIT cardio and lower body weights: leg press (various foot positions), hamstrings, calf raises and some really good stretching. I usually do abs everyday but since I had a baby I think I may need to ease back into that.

Today's food:

2 shredded wheat bars w/ 1% milk (1/2 cup) and 1 tsp sugar
1 cup coffee w/ milk and 1 sugar
1 banana
1 apple
1 pear
6 grape tomatoes
6 baby carrots
6 ritz style crackers
2 protein shakes
Maybe some soup... we'll see how I feel

And I"m making my famous low fat pizza for supper. If anyone wants the recipe, PM me :).

Oh, and I noticed something weird today. I normally avoid mirrors, but when I'm getting dressed at home or the gym, I can't help but see my own stomach. Well..... unless I"m completely blind or missed ti somehow for the last year, it would seem I have stretch marks ABOVE my naval. I don't recall those being there before. I eman it's possible that I just missed them but I dunno. Anyway, c'est la vie.

Cheers,

Sounds tasty! there is a recipe section of the forum you could post it in if you'd like.

Stretch marks will fade, don't worry. I have rediculous amounts of stretch marks. I've got them on my stomach, all the way up under and around my "moobs" :p , underneath my arm all down my side wrapping around to my back, all around my bicep area all the way down to my elbow and encroaching on the underside of my forearm, both my knees, and a few other places I don't really feel like describing :p They used to be all bright pink, which really wasn't a nice contrast against my pale white body. I used to be ashamed and terrified to remove my shirt around people. I wore long sleeve shirts always to try to hide the stretch marks near the kink in my elbow. Fortunately, 90% of them are near invisible and normal colored. I can still tell where they are if I look close, like old scars. But they'll always be there, reminding me where I came from.

Recipe section!! duh why didn't I think of that :). I may do that a little later today.

About the stretch marks...... I know they'll fade and to be honest, I'm not even worried about them. They kind of offset my other scars from my battles with cats, reptiles, boxing, karate, etc LOL. What is just weird is that these are pretty noticeable and I DIDN'T even see them there before?? WTF?? LOL. Can you grow stretch marks overnight? LOL. Not a biggie.... just a weirdie :p.

I feel your pain on the long shirts.... I will wear tshirts but NEVER shorts or tank tops in public.. NO DAMN WAY!!! I'm just too embarassed. That will change eventually :).

Mar1984, you are so my hero for being on here and working hard towards losing weight. Very inspirational :) Everyone is really, but you have come so far with your weightloss and you're so supportive; you make me feel like I can overcome this weight problem in a snap. So again, TY :)
